Christopher Kane Rocks

Friday, December 31, 2010

I had a really hard time trying to decide on my favourite runway moment/show of the past decade.  Obviously Tom Ford's final collections for YSL and Gucci rank highly on the list, as well as the incredible shows from the couture collections every season.  There are also so many locals who have put on amazing shows in the past decade, NZFW's retrospective show at this year's fashion week certainly highlighted that.

But for me the runway show that really stands out on my mind (it being so very bright might have something to do with it) is young Scottish designer Christopher Kane's outstanding debut at the 2006 London Fashion Week with his show stopping Spring/Summer 2007 collection.  Storming down the runway in micro short bandage dresses like Herve Leger's on acid, this collection made all the fashion editors take notice with it's ultra bright and super sexy spirit, no doubt inspired by 90's Azzedine Alaia and Gianni Versace.

These dresses are so intricate, clever and in the most incredible shades, I just love how fun and fabulous it all is.  The parachute like belts, lacing and pretty frills really make me happy.  Kane was credited with bringing back fluro trend that followed with this collection and this splash of a debut secured his place as a designer to watch.  This collection sold out pretty much the instant it hit stores and it's not hard to see why.  Definitely my favourite runway show of the decade.

The Amazing Miss Juliette

Juliette's 'Mind Your Manners' collection on the runway at NZ Fashion Week 2008
The designer that has truly captured my imagination and has me highly anticipating her every move and new collection she makes is local Juliette Hogan.  Anyone who knows me personally will know that I own more of Juliette's clothing than any other designer now, and have several pieces from every collection since I first discovered her label several years ago.  She started it in 2004 and established her gorgeous Ponsonby road store (which I confess to visiting at least every couple of weeks) in 2007.

Juliette has gained a significant following in the past couple of years, becoming a New Zealand Fashion Week must-see for local fashionistas.  Her sophisticated designs have also become media favourites and have graced television screens and red carpets both in New Zealand and overseas in that time.  Juliette's collections are beautiful, feminine, stylish, timeless and appeal to me in every way.  She mixes modern and vintage for a look that is just so pretty, totally her own and ulitmately really wearable.  I'm so excited about and cannot wait to see her new collection 'The morning after the night before' instore in February.

Enchanting Emily's Captivating Couture

Thursday, December 30, 2010

Trying to decide on my favourite fashion photoshoot of the past decade was very nearly impossible, but this beautiful shoot of the elegant Emily Blunt resplendent in magnificent couture is permanently stuck in my mind and the clear winner for me.  Photographed for Vanity Fair's May 2009 issue by Michael Roberts in Le Raincy just outside Paris.  Emily wears some truly exquisite creations from the world's finest couturiers including Dior, Chanel, Gautier, Valentino, Givenchy, Christian Lacroix and Armani Prive.

This shoot is simply sublime in every way, from the incredible location, Marie Antoinette theme, handsome men in waiting, stunning couture and of course the glamourous model/actress.  The Dior haute couture gowns in the above and bottom shots are my absolute favourites, it would be so amazing to actually wear something so phenomenally beautiful, even just for a short time for a shoot.  I absolutely adore these pretty photos and they make up by far my favourite shoot of the past decade.

Miss Natalie's Prima Ballerina Moment

Thursday, December 30, 2010

Natalie Portman is radiant in ballerina peach on the cover of US Vogue's January issue.  She also appears in a photoshoot in the issue, shot by Peter Lindbergh and inspired by her new ballet film 'Black Swan', which I can't wait to see.  The photos are beautiful, ethereal and oh so pretty, I love them.

Congratulations are also due to the lovely Miss Portman, who recently annouced her engagement and pregnancy to Choreographer Benjamin Millepied whom she met on the set of Black Swan.  It's certainly going to be an exciting year ahead for her.

Sweet, Sheer, Sexy and Stolen

Thursday, December 30, 2010

Summer is in full swing down here in the southern hemisphere, which means hot, humid days and soaring temperatures.  The perfect weather for light as air clothing, which is where Stolen Girlfriends Club's current womens collection comes in.

This clever label have a knack for putting their own twist on their designs and this collection entitled 'Heavy Petal' sees them working with pretty, translucent fabrics in soft colours with the ubiquitous black in the mix of course.  Creating garments that are sheer in just the right places, being effortlessly sweet, sexy and totally wearable all at the same time.  I would love to have every one of these tempting pieces in my wardrobe this summer.

Peek A Boo Kate

Thursday, December 30, 2010

The eternally gorgeous Kate Moss smoulders as a striking brunette in this sixties styled photoshoot.  Shot by Nick Knight for Vogue Italia's December issue, it shows just how different Miss Moss can look with decidedly darker hair.  I really love this shoot for it's retro feel and peek-a-boo, cheeky quality, it feels like we are being given a glimpse at some private moments we wouldn't otherwise see.  I particularly love the very sixties make-up of heavy eyeliner and pale lips, it suits her fuller darker hairstyle perfectly.

That Incredible Emerald Dress

Keira Knightley and James McAvoy in Atonement.
As 2010 comes quickly to a close, I've been thinking about my favourite fashion moments of the past 10 years.  The outfits that have captured my imagination on-screen, on the runway, in photoshoots etc in this past crazy decade.  As much as it's incredibly hard to narrow down all those amazing creations, there are just a few that have really stuck in my mind in a way that is impossible to ignore.  For me, as I'm sure for a lot of you, Keira Knightley's exquisite green silk dress in the 2007 film Atonement is the on-screen outfit that blew me away and is forever ingrained in my memory.

Daria's Vintage Getaway

Sunday, December 19, 2010

I love editorials that tell a story and engage the viewer in a way that's more than just pretty pictures.  Created by two living fashion legends, photographer Peter Lindbergh and US Vogue's Creative Director Grace Coddington, this particular shoot for Vogue's January issue was always going to be incredible.

Featuring the gorgeous Daria Werbowy as a journalist and actor David Strathairn as a photographer, these two portray a 'brief but affectionate relationship'.  Although this shoot has a vintage feel, the outfits are all new season Spring/Summer 2011.  The art direction, styling and props in this shoot are fantastic, I love that the styling has a romantic feel and the props are mostly vintage (adore that car).  Can't wait to get a copy of this issue and see these amazing pages in print.
