Happy 30th Birthday Fashion Quarterly

Wednesday, September 1, 2010

One of my all time favourite fashion magazines is celebrating it's 30th birthday at the moment.  Created by the legendary Paula Ryan, Fashion Quarterly started life as a small catalogue called 'Fashion' distributed to Christchurch letterboxes in 1980.  Now it is the most read fashion magazine in New Zealand and appearing in it's glossy pages is how our local labels know they have made it.

I have loved Fashion Quarterly since I was little, I used to look at my mother's copies in the 80's until I started buying my own in high school.  The fashion shoots are always absolutely gorgeous, the editorial pieces are so well written and it is a magazine I savour from cover to cover.  I can't believe it's nearly as old as I am already (I'm 31 this month which is getting here fast).

Below is the 120 covers of Fashion Quarterly which feature in it's birthday issue.  They have certainly had a diverse group of faces gracing the cover the years, although the covers have always featured women primarily.  Only the odd male has got to share a cover which is how it should be for a women's fashion magazine.

A tribute video has also been put together in celebration of FQ's birthday which features many familiar kiwi fashion faces talking about the magazine's history and what it means to NZ's fashion industry.  The link for which is here:

Happy Birthday Fashion Quarterly, it's been a fabulous 30 years.  I can't wait to see what the next 30 brings.
