Sublime Sophie

Monday, February 28, 2011

This shoot has the most beautiful soft lighting and dreamy camera work that I've seen in a while.  Shot for Marie Claire Spain by Thiemo Sander and featuring the stunning Sophie Vlaming.  It's ethereal beauty is further enhanced by the delicate silk, tulle and lace garments.  I adore everything about this shoot, the location is perfect for the effect they are going for, but what I love most is the lighting, it's just sublime and really sensual.

Anne's Big Night

Valentino
When Anne Hathaway was announced as co-presenter of this years Oscars, with the handsome James Franco, I was particularly excited by the idea of what she would wear onstage and on the red carpet.  As we all know female presenters especially like to change their looks several times during these kinds of ceremonies, so the possibilities were endless really.

Anne is styled by super stylist Rachel Zoe and her red carpet looks are usually particularly stunning.  Her showstopping bronze backless number at this year's Golden Globes was a standout for me.  I have to say I wasn't overwhelmed by her Oscars red carpet arrival in scarlet Valentino, it's a great colour on her, but I wasn't a fan of the rosettes and bunching at the back.  However she quickly started making up for it with her onstage ensembles.

Donning the most incredible jewels by Tiffany and Co throughout the evening, Anne wore some truly gorgeous outfits from some of the world's top designers.  Gowns by Tom Ford, Armani Prive, Atelier Versace, Vivienne Westwood Couture, Givenchy Haute Couture by Riccardo Tisci and Oscar de La Renta all graced her lithe frame, as well as a custom made tuxedo by Lanvin for a musical number.

My favourite was definitely the burgundy Atelier Versace, which made the most of her curves and had the most beautiful and intricate sequinned design, that made her look like a goddess.  But to be honest I loved all of her onstage choices.  She took risks which was great, but ultimately looked stylish and the perfect hostess.  All hail Anne.

Oh So Oscars

Hilary Swank
I adore red carpet season and especially Oscars night.  There is a palpable buzz and excitement on the red carpet, probably more so than for any other Hollywood event during the year.  The starlets grace us with their prescence in some of the most stunning gowns and accessories, some of which are fresh off the couture runways from Paris.  This year's amazing outfits were as breathtaking as expected and there were definite trends towards all shades of red, nude tones, jewel and berry shades amongst the gowns.

Leading in the style stakes were Hilary Swank (above) in sequinned and feathered Gucci, Amy Adams in midnight blue L'Wren Scott and the very pregnant Natalie Portman in flowing Rodarte.  These ladies all chose incredible gowns that truly suit them and accesorised them perfectly.  Congratulations are most definitely due to the talented Miss Portman for winning the Best Actress Oscar for Black Swan, capping off an impressive amount of wins for her this awards season.

Looking every bit her regal self, Helen Mirren shone in Vivienne Westwood Couture, which while being totally age appropriate, really shone on her.  Going for full on sparkle was Mandy Moore in dazzling Monique L'Huiller, her scarlet lips and simple jewellery were the perfect accent to her delightful look.  I also adored Reese Witherspoon's cute and sassy sixties inspired Armani Prive outfit, the high pony and heavy winged eyeliner were a rather inspired touch.

Sandra Bullock was absolutely radiant in scarlet Vera Wang, her outfit is so elegant and sophisticated.  I love that she went for the less is more approach with her accessories and let her incredible dress take the spotlight.  The youngest starlet on the red carpet this year was 14 year old Hailee Steinfeld looking cute, fresh and age appropriate in sparkly Marchesa, her outfit has a real fairy tale princess feel which suits her perfectly.

Complimenting her cute blonde pixie haircut was Michelle Williams in silver embellished Chanel, that dress looks sensational on her and really elegant.  Going for simple but very va va voom was Jennifer Lawrence in figure hugging Calvin Klein, she looks probably a tad casual for the Oscars but it has to be said that dress hugs her amazing curves in all the right places.  Rounding out my favourite looks would have to be Celine Dion, who we haven't seen on the Oscars red carpet in years.  She has also kept her look simple in shiny Armani Prive but she looks sophisticated and that showstopping Van Cleef and Arpels necklace really makes the look.

Another wonderful red carpet awards season is over for now, but it has certainly been an impressive one.  So many astonishingly beautiful outfits, glamourous starlets and exciting moments.  Congratulations to all the winners and their truly outstanding achievements, fashion was also the winner on the night.

Mila's Lovely In Lilac

Monday, February 28, 2011

Oscars time is finally here and it is truly the highlight of the red carpet season.  Starlets save their most incredible dresses to sparkle in on Oscars night.  There were some truly amazing outfits on the red carpet again this year, but my absolute favourite would have to be Mila Kunis in this delicate lilac Elie Saab creation.

I actually featured this beautiful gown last month in my post on Elie Saab's exquisite couture show and was thrilled to see it on Mila, as it suits her perfectly.  She has made some really inspired choices this red carpet season in Alexander McQueen and Vera Wang and I love that she is keeping her looks fresh, elegant and pretty.  Well done Miss Mila.

Hot As Holland

Sunday, February 20, 2011

I love designers that like their fashion with a dash of fun and Henry Holland certainly has a great sense of humour.  His nana chic collection, yes, I did just say nana and chic in the same sentance, is quirky, fresh and totally cool.  Parading down the runway at London fashion week came all manners of colourful crochet inspired garments, mixed with candy coloured tweeds and silks and some leather jackets to toughen things up a bit.

Of course his fantastic tights, of which I own more pairs than I will admit to here, were also on display and in matching bright colours to his brilliant outfits.  I adore this collection for it's cute, cheeky brand of cool.  Henry Holland certainly is a master at turning on the charm and wowing us with his unique sense of style and fun.

Glamourous NY

Saturday, February 19, 2011

Another New York Fashion Week is done and dusted and the fashion pack have moved on to London with the expectations of another amazing week to come.  After viewing as much runway footage as I could cram into my brain this past week, I wanted to post the photos of the looks I loved the most, with my own spin.  Since it's red carpet season and the Oscars aren't far away, I focused on red carpet looks when choosing my outfits for this post, as opposed to choosing from all the beautiful daywear on display.

My pick of NY would have to be Rodarte, I absolutely adored their prairie inspired collection, it's just perfection.  It's that amazing mix of vintage, modern and feminine in a soft and pretty colour palette with just enough edge to keep it interesting.  What's not to love about a collection partly inspired by Dorothy in 'The Wizard of Oz' after all.

Closely following Rodarte would be Jason Wu, for his elegant, ladylike collection.  Marc Jacobs crazy polka dot, lace and leather frenzy would be next.  L'Wren Scott's pretty, girly colours captured my imagination.  And of course Marchesa's fabulous decaying opulence collection inspired by Miss Havisham from Great Expectations (which is one of my favourite books) was just spectacular and an unexpected approach from Georgina Chapman, but I just loved it.

The Northern hemisphere's Fall/Winter 2011/12 is certainly going to be a beautiful one, with lots of colours (especially scarlet), textures (adoring all the velvet) and incredible silhouettes (Ladylike is here to stay!).  London is already underway with Sass and Bide leading the charge for this side of the world, I can't wait to see what comes down the runways next.  Fashion week season is always such an exciting time of year.

Bafta's Beauty

Wednesday, February 16, 2011

The red carpet glamour continued over the weekend, with the Bafta's taking place in London on a rather wet and chilly evening.  The UK's film and television awards is always a somewhat soggy affair given it's still winter in Europe, but the starlets still pulled out the sparkle in a series of stunning gowns.  The photo of Emma Watson (above) in oyster coloured Valentino is one of my favourites.  You can see how amazing the fabric of the dress is in that light and I love the candid nature of the photo, as she attempts to pull her dress out of a puddle.

Despite the dreary weather there was plenty of bright and beautiful colours paraded down the red carpet.  I love the bright blue bow on Gemma Arterton's stylish YSL mermaid tail dress.  Jessica Alba took it a step further in brilliant blue Versace, which looks just incredible on her.  Rosamund Pike and Thandie Newton opted for striking prints in pretty hues from Alexander McQueen and Monique L'Huiller respectively.  I've featured both of these gowns before in my runway coverage and it's always interesting to see how they are styled for the red carpet.

Amy Adams looked just gorgeous in her peach Elie Saab gown, which is also hot off the runway.  Harry Potter actress, Bonnie Wright, went for slightly more casual, but very elegant Clements Ribiero, I just adore this look on her.  Lastly I just had to add the shot of man of the evening Colin Firth, with his partner Livia Giuggioli.  I love the draping of her dress and this is a cute shot of the two of them.

It's hard to believe it's mid February already and the Oscars are just around the corner.  I can't wait to see the red carpet looks from what is undoubtedly Hollywood's most glamourous night of the year.
