Catherine Middleton's Exquisite Royal Wedding Gown

Friday, April 29, 2011

The moment fashionistas the world over have been waiting for since late last year has finally arrived, when we got the first proper glimpse of Catherine Middleton's exquisite royal wedding gown.  Widely rumoured to be made by Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen, but a very well kept secret, that was confirmed at precisely 11am when Catherine exited the car at Westminster Abbey and we got to see the amazing gown in it's sublime entirety.

A beautifully traditional ivory gown made from silk gazar, in Catherine's understated but elegant style.  The gown is high necked with a sculpted bodice and chantilly lace overlay, it has full length lace sleeves with delicate covered buttons up the inside of the sleeves.  The lace applique was handmade by the Royal School of Needlework at Hampton Court Palace and the design of the lace was custom made to incorporate the four emblems of the United Kingdom; the rose, thistle, daffodil and shamrock.  Nipped in at the waist, the gown has a full skirt designed to resemble an opening flower and the train is a modest 9ft length but perfectly matched to the style of the garment.  Her low heeled ivory silk shoes are also by McQueen.

Sarah Burton had this to say about working on Catherine's wedding gown: "It has been the experience of a lifetime to work with Catherine Middleton to create her wedding dress, and I have enjoyed every moment of it. It was such an incredible honour to be asked, and I am so proud of what we and the Alexander McQueen team have created".

To complete her bridal look, Catherine is wearing a stunning sheer veil trimmed with hand embroidered flowers and fastened to a diamond and pearl tiara, with her long dark locks flowing down her back.  The tiara is a 1936 Cartier Halo tiara lent to her by the Queen herself.  Catherine is also wearing simple diamond drop earrings in the shape of acorns by Robinson Pelham.

Her maid of honour, sister Pippa Middleton's dress is also by Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen and her's is an ivory sheath dress with scooped cowl neckline and flared from the knee skirt.  She also looks completely stunning and wonderfully happy to be a part of her sister's big day.

Catherine really looks like the perfect fairytale princess and every inch a radiant bride.  I absolutely adore her gown and think she made the perfect choice.  She stayed true to her own feminine and classic personal style and could not have looked more gorgeous as she positively glowed with happiness throughout the day.  I think every female in the world swooned when she arrived at the altar and her bridegroom prince's first words to her were 'You look beautiful'.

Congratulations Catherine and William, now the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.  I sincerely hope you have a very long and happy life together.

The Beckham's Royal Outing

Friday, April 29, 2011

The Beckham's are well known for being infinitely stylish and Victoria's career move over the past few years to become a fashion designer has epitomised that.  Their arrival at the Royal wedding drew the attention of all the photographers and camera crews in attendance.  I think Victoria looks tres chic in a midnight blue boatneck dress from her own label, with a Phillip Treacy pillbox hat and sky high Christian Louboutin heels.

David also looks rather dapper in his Ralph Lauren morning suit and Phillip Treacy top hat, his outfit is accessorised by his CBE medal on his lapel.  These two certainly make a striking couple and Victoria's baby bump is barely visible under her dress.  I'm sure they are enjoying every moment of this amazing day.

The Winsome Miss Witherspoon

Wednesday, April 27, 2011

The lovely Reese Witherspoon is certainly looking foxy on the subscriber cover of Elle UK's May issue, which is one of my favourite magazines.  We're certainly seeing a lot of Reese at the moment, with her wedding photos recently published and her new movie 'Water For Elephants' being released, which I can't wait to see.

The photo above is a side of her we don't often see, as her image is more of a charming America's sweetheart type.  That makes me love it even more and let's face it the recently married Reese looks seriously hot with that smokey eye make-up, barely there outfit and stilettos.

She also graces the cover of US Vogue this month (below) and features in a beautiful circus themed editorial to tie in with her new movie, shot by Peter Lindberg.  I love the drama and beauty of these shots and that she is photographed with her amazing elephant co-star Tai, from her movie.

Perfectly Pretty Things

Tuesday, April 26, 2011

I could not be more excited to tell you about All the Pretty Things.  It's a new Australian based online lingerie store that has just opened and stocks some of my favourite lovely labels, including Lonely by Lonely Hearts and Toad Lillie whom I recently blogged about here.  They also stock gorgeous fancies from Fleur of England, Hopeless Lingerie, Made By Niki and The Lake And The Stars.

As you can see by these beautiful photos of available pieces, they really do live up to their name by stocking some super pretty things.  The site also has a cute blog, offers gift vouchers and a personalised fitting service to help you choose the best fitting pieces.  I adore most of the garments on there and just love that I got to learn about some new labels I hadn't heard of before.  Happy lingerie shopping.

The Land Of Make Believe

Sunday, April 24, 2011

Long before I started working in fashion, I made my living in the worlds of film, television and theatre.  The entertainment business still holds a very dear place in my heart and costumes were always one of my favourite parts about making shows or films.  It was with great delight that I came across this editorial shot by Dima Hohlov for The Dirty Durty Diary, which celebrates the work of talented costume designer William Ivey.

Featuring glorious costumes from productions of both stage and screen, including Nine, The Producers, and Chicago.  This wonderful editorial was shot at New York's The Ambassador Theatre and stars Valeria Dmitrienko as a sexy starlet in the making.  I admire everything about this editorial, the costumes are simply sublime, the dramatic lighting suits the nature of the piece exactly and I love the location.  Combining my great loves of fashion, film and theatre, for me these photos are perfection.

Katie Does Chic

Friday, April 22, 2011

It's certainly been a super busy month for young local designer Katie Coleman.  She has launched her namesake label Katie-Maree Cole's new Autumn/Winter Collection 'Bonnie. be good.', shown at iD Fashion Week in Dunedin and had her own runway show and sale for her new collection in Auckland, all in the past few weeks.  I was lucky enough to attend her show on Wednesday and get an up close look at her beautiful new collection, which I'm really impressed by.

Her show was held at Carrington's Cafe in Mt Albert and was the perfect, intimate setting for her new collection.  It was great to see the pieces brought to life on delightful, pony limbed models on the runway, with shoes sponsored by Chaos and Harmony.  The show was well received by an appreciative audience, who gathered pretty quickly around the racks of elegant garments for sale afterwards.  I also got to meet and have a quick chat to the designer herself after the show, who is every bit as lovely as her creations.

Katie's focus as a designer is on making gorgeous, feminine pieces, that are really wearable, with an emphasis on rich, pretty colours and use of good quality natural fabrics - mostly cottons, silks and merino wools.  The colour palette for her new winter collection is just sublime, as you can see in these lookbook shots.  I really love the stunning plaid fabric she has used, the top outfit pictured is my favourite, as I adore that skirt and cleverly draped top, although I would wear every piece of this collection.  If you want to get your hands on some of her pretty pieces, they are available to buy through her website here.  They sell for really reasonable prices and are the perfect chic additions to your Autumn/Winter wardrobe.

Mademoiselle Keira

Monday, April 18, 2011

Keira Knightley smoulders in her latest advertising campaign for Chanel's Coco Mademoiselle fragrance, which is one of my all time favourites and signature scent.  Keira has represented this gorgeous fragrance since 2007, and in my opinion is the perfect fit for such an elegant scent.

Her new Coco Mademoiselle commercial has recently been released and is directed by 'Atonement' and 'Pride and Prejudice' director Joe Wright.  Keira is captured waking up in bed (looking flawless of course) and racing through the streets of Paris in a skintight beige catsuit, on a rather hot matching motorbike.  She then seduces a handsome photographer, played by Argentine Alberto Amman, and unexpectedly pulls a disappearing act and vanishes out a window leaving him in her wake.

It's a beautifully shot clip, as you would expect with Wright directing and Knightley as the star.  I'm a big fan of both of them and really enjoyed this little film, Keira is definitely at her flirtacious best in it.  Watch the stunning clip for yourself here.

Mesmerising Miss Unkon

Sunday, April 17, 2011

I love this moody shoot for Australian label Miss Unkon's Autumn/Winter 2011 collection 'When We Grow Up'.  The garments are quite lovely too, they're that intriguing mix of feminine, edgy and classic, in a really pretty colour palette of  lilac, mauve, peach, tan, grey and ivory.

As you can probably guess with my girly tastes, I adore the lilac dress in the top photo most from this collection.  It's got drama, beauty and romanticism in a way that I find irresistable.  I also really love the wonderful textures of these pieces, those knits look so delightful and warm to wear.  The full collection is available to view on their charming website.
