Too Cool For School

Tuesday, May 31, 2011

I'm never really sure of just the right words to describe Twenty-Seven Names, who are without a doubt, the cool kids of New Zealand fashion.  Their label has an old school charm and quirkiness that's quite wearable and pretty relaxed.  But it's also utterly girly in it's lacey, pin-tucked, heart-printed, reminds me of dresses I used to wear to school way.  Yet it still feels fresh, modern and on trend at the same time, see what I mean about hard to describe?

Anyway, Twenty-Seven Names' latest offering for Spring/Summer 2011/12 'Still waters run deep' features more pretty prints, ruffles and cute bow ties in a sweet colour palette of subdued hues, accented by the rainbow coloured hearts.  I think this collection is simply stellar, as it's fun and playful while still being feminine and in silhouettes I can easily adapt into my wardrobe and will want to wear again and again.

Couture, Katy And Paris

Tuesday, May 31, 2011

June's Vanity Fair covergirl is the striking Katy Perry, who really is everywhere at the moment, with her tour, fragrance, album and new singles making her a constant media presence.  I love Katy's retro inspired and often quirky style, she really does dance to her own beat fashion wise and it works for her.

These stunning photos accompany a feature article written on the pop star and they were shot on location in Paris, with straight off the runway couture from Christian Dior and Jean Paul Gaultier.  I adore these outfits on Katy, she looks so very elegant and ladylike.  That beautiful face and curvy silhouette could not be more perfect for these vintage inspired looks.

All That Sparkles Is Swarovski

Tuesday, May 31, 2011

I have been so super busy lately I hadn't got to catch up on the last few episodes of Gossip Girl until the past couple of days.  The fashion on that show is always inspiring and I can't help but covet both Blair's and Serena's incredible wardrobes, oh and Chuck and Nate of course.  Anyway I just so happened to notice Blair's exquisite necklace teamed with a gorgeous blush Oscar de la Renta gown in the 'Pretty In Pink' episode.  It really is the most beautiful tones and made me curious to have more of a look at Swarovski's latest offerings.

The amazing pieces below are from Swarovski's most recent 'Wings Of Poetry' collection and are simply sublime.  I really do want every single piece as they are such pretty colours and I'm a total magpie when it comes to sparkly jewellery.  They really do appeal to the princess within, I think I know exactly what I want for my next birthday now, just which wonderful piece to choose?

Luscious Lara

Tuesday, May 31, 2011

I saw this shoot earlier this month and it cracked me up.  I don't take myself too seriously and love fashion shoots with a sense of humour too.  This amusing shoot featuring Lara Stone and her inflatable friends was shot by Mikael Jansson for Interview's May issue.

Lara looks fantastic as a redhead and I love the sexy retro inspired swimwear choices.  She really looks like she's enjoying herself and being a bit silly in this shoot and at the end of the day as much as fashion is a business, I think it should also be fun too.

Pretty Penny Lane

Tuesday, May 31, 2011

Sixties inspired and pretty as can be is Forever New's latest collection entitled 'Penny Lane'.  Swinging shift dresses, A line mini skirts and tailored short shorts are a strong feature of this playful and oh so wearable range.  The look is retro, think Twiggy or Audrey Hepburn, but in fresh and girly lace and polkadots with block colours of navy, blush and neutrals.

I adore this collection, it's so wonderfully charming and fun.  These pieces are really gorgeous and so feminine, while harking back to a more glamourous era in fashion.  Forever New is one chain store label that has really caught my attention in the past year, for their ability to create well made, well priced, fast fashion, that perfectly complements the rest of my wardrobe, with pretty pieces and accessories I want to keep and wear again and again.  Well done Forever New, can't wait to see what you come up with next.

Monday Must Have From Miss Wilson

Monday, May 30, 2011

Katherine Wilson's new diffusion line Miss Wilson was launched earlier this year for Autumn/Winter 2011 and I have been meaning to feature some of her pretty new shoes for a while.  Today's Monday Must Have is the super cute Miss Wilson 'Winnie' wedge which comes in cobalt, red and black suede.

They are reasonably priced at just $225 (NZD) and are rather adorable with that sweet little bow.  These shoes are so versatile and easy to work into your wardrobe, although the cobalt is definitely my favourite, I love that colour.  You can check them out at Kathryn Wilson's website here and buy a pair online to add a splash of colour to your winter wardrobe.

J'Adore Juliette

Monday, May 30, 2011

I'm super excited at the moment as southern hemisphere Spring/Summer 2011/12 collections are currently being shown in media/VIP events and at PR companies around Auckland.  They are previewing the beautiful new ranges that will be instore in a couple of months time, before the public get to see them.  As New Zealand Fashion Week is only once a year this is the way the media get to see what's coming up so they can start planning their editorials etc.

The first collection I wanted to write about and the one I am most thrilled to preview is from my favourite New Zealand designer Juliette Hogan.  Juliette's style aesthetic is really similar to my own feminine and ladylike one, with touches of vintage sexiness and bad girl appeal.  In her latest range "Fall in love, not in line' she again explores the prim muse with a darker edge who is flirting with her naughty side.  The result is gorgeous girly clothes toughened up with touches of brown and black leather.

Sweet, subtle florals, lace, signature prints and pleats are again part of her collection, with a laid back approach to knits and draping.  These are the perfect garments for picnics in the park, shopping with girlfriends and lovely summer outings.  As I expected I adore every piece and simply cannot wait to get my hands on this collection in the not too distant future.  It's another fabulous triumph from a designer who in my opinion always sets the tone just right.

Shiny And New

Sunday, May 29, 2011

Brand spanking new Virgine Magazine has just been launched online and will be launched in print in New York and around the world on June 1st.  Founded by photographer and Editor In Chief, Ryan Yoon, Virgine is a fashion magazine without limits, that aims to blur the boundaries between art, music, fashion and the creative industries in a new way.  An example of their different approach is the editorial shoot 'All You Can Get' which is a mix of fashion and art, as it features garments made out of coke cans, tide containers and even m&m's.  I think it's safe to say that m&m dress would quickly get shorter and shorter if left in my hands, but it certainly is cleverly constructed.

Virgine's first issue features several fascinating interviews including one with fashion legend Azzedine Alaia.  As expected with an established photographer at the helm, the editorial shoots are inspired and utterly beautiful.  One of my favourites is a Madonna influenced shoot which I've included a few photos of below.  For a limited time you can download the first issue for free at Virgine's website.  I really recommend that you do as it's certainly a spectacular debut, both thoroughly readable and aesthetically delightful.
