Party With Alex Perry

Wednesday, May 18, 2011

My amazing friend, Sydney Stylist and Fashion Editor of A New MuseMitchell Steed, kindly agreed to write some guest posts for Just So Pretty, on his experiences and shows he enjoyed at RAFW 2011.  Here is his first one on Aussie party dress extraordinaire Alex Perry's runway show:

For those of us who were in a Day 1 RAFW sleepy coma, Alex Perry certainly woke us up with his brightly coloured collections and booming soundtrack. With a line up resembling the front of Zara these past weeks, you could feel everyone’s excitement to see the show, reflecting back on the show you can certainly see why.

The weather may have been gloomy in Sydney, but as soon as the show began the music blew it away, with epic club worthy beats and Cuban inspired spicy, sultry looks. Bright block colours with names such as Pepper, Blood Orange and Curacao Blue were a dominant focus in this collection, which made you escape into a hot night of cocktails and dancing. Row stitched bands, which reminded me somewhat of karate belts, accented the garments with hints of class, while sequin details brought out the party girl mood present in the Alex Perry woman.

Some of my favourite looks included a bright coloured dress in blue and red silk, with a mixture of sequins and block colours worn by Alice Burdeu, a white dress with an interesting lattice effect embellishment worn by Vanessa Milde and a gorgeous high split dress worn by Lauren Brown. It was in a beautiful floral print with an orange band and structured torso in cream, I felt it had an underlying influence from a Japanese Kimono.

At one stage it was hard for me to remember I was at a fashion show, the music and bright colours made me feel like I was in a street carnival celebrating the summer season, the temptation to get up and dance was hard to fight. For me this is the essence of a summer collection, you want your audience to escape and really feel the mood you’re trying to create. Alex Perry certainly did this and I know many women who are drooling over his gorgeous gowns.
