Robyn's Radiant Triumph

Sunday, July 31, 2011

The exquisite Robyn Lawley really is having an incredible year so far.  Fresh from her appearance on the cover of Vogue Italia, she now features solo in this superb 10 page editorial for Vogue Australia's about to be released September issue, shot by Max Doyle.  The first time in the magazine's 52 year history a plus size model has done so, according to it's editor Kirstie Clements.  It's definitely a massive triumph for Robyn and signals an ongoing changing attitude in magazine's approaches to curvier models.  Robyn is actually a size 14 according to her modelling agency's website, in case you're wondering what counts as plus sized in fashion.  Interestingly enough the average size woman in Australia and New Zealand is also a size 14.

But back to the photos, I think these shots are just divine and Robyn looks oh so sexy with this retro styling and fitted monochrome outfits.  The semi-sheerness of some of the garments, hints of lingerie and stay up stockings add to the seductive effect of these shots. I think any red-blooded male in the world would buy anything this gorgeous girl cared to sell them dressed like this.

I'm not usually one to weigh in on the contentious model size debate, no pun intended, but I have to admit the modelling world's labelling of any model over a size 10 as plus sized really does bug me.  Having been around runway shows and models a lot over the past 3 years, I understand it's just how the industry is and that it is slowly changing to embrace curvier girls.  But part of what bugs me is that for clothing, the label 'plus sized' isn't applied to a garment until it's over a size 14, yet when it comes to models, any girl over a size 10 is labelled as plus sized, see the discrepancy there?  Seems rather odd doesn't it?  I don't think it's fair on any girl who's a size 10, 12 or 14 to be labelled plus sized when by the clothing's definition, she's not.  It's that kind of labelling that damages self esteem and confidence.

I honestly believe we should be embracing our natural body shapes, both in fashion and in life.  Whether tall, slim, petite or curvy, beauty really does come in all shapes and sizes and it's great that fashion is beginning to embrace that more.  After all happy and healthy is what we should be aspiring to, as there's much more to life than the size on the tag of your clothing.

What are your thoughts on these pretty images?  Do you want to see more curvy models in the pages of fashion magazines?

Glorious Ginger And Smart

Sunday, July 31, 2011

Sunset in garment form is what I think when I look at this first sensational Ginger and Smart dress, from their new Spring/Summer 2011/12 collection Anon.  The soft pinks, reds and lilacs remind me of an amazing sunset at the end of a wonderful day and I would imagine that wearing this dress feels just as perfect.  I've been a fan of Sydney sisters Genevieve and Alexandra Smart's fabulous label for a few years now and always delight in their beautiful use of colour and draping.

This collection is another stellar one from Ginger and Smart, I love the brilliant prints and sublime silks that make these pieces all so covetable.  Feminine, but modern and strong, this collection is so versatile and encompasses the perfect looks for daywear, workwear and eveningwear.  The top dress is definitely my favourite for it's soft and elegant simplicity, but I would cheerfully add all of these garments to my wardrobe for summer.

Just So Beautiful

I just saw these incredible beauty shots from the newly released companion to New Zealand Fashion Week 'The Guide' and had to post them.  Published by Remix magazine, it contains pretty much everything you need to know about NZFW in detail and is a great read.  These pretty photos just so happen to feature three of my favourite local models, Penny Pickard (who seems to be everywhere at the moment), Grace Owen and Jane Etheridge.

Shot by Jessica Sim, styled by Dan Ahwa and with make-up by Amber D from MAC (Grace), Phoenix Renata (Penny) and Helen Luo (Jane), the result is these stunning images, which are both striking and utterly feminine.  I love the clever use of flowers, romantic styling and textured hair.  I haven't picked up a copy of The Guide yet, but I definitely will do soon as NZFW is less than a month away now.

For The LOVE Of Elle

Tuesday, July 26, 2011

Could this photo be any more breath-takingly beautiful?  Looking oh so ethereal on the cover of the about to be released Love magazine, is young starlet Elle Fanning.  At just 13 years of age, she is absolutely gorgeous and has been acting since she was a toddler, starting out playing the younger versions of her older sister Dakota's characters in films.  I wrote a post about her late last year looking lovely in Marchesa, but she certainly looks more grown-up on this cover, I'm sure this precocious teen has a big future ahead of her.

This cover from cult UK magazine Love from their sixth issue, was shot by Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott and goes on sale on August 1st.  It's the first of a series of 3 covers which will be released this week and followed by an additional five special edition fashion covers on September 1st - exciting!  I can't wait to see what other covers they come up with and get my hands on their next fantastic issue!

Update 30th July: The next two Love covers have been released and are also of teenagers, Chloe Moretz and Hailee Steinfeld, both covers were also shot by Mert & Marcus.  My favourite is still the Elle cover though, interestingly enough if you look closely on all three covers it appears that each girl is softly crying.  I'd love to know what Love were thinking when adding tears to the looks, be interesting to find out how it relates to the issue.

Monday Must Have From Manning Cartell

Monday, July 25, 2011

Flowing silk in fabulous contrasting colours, the Felucca Maxi dress from Aussie label Manning Cartell is my Monday Must Have for this week and I think it's easy to see why.  The clever cut of this striking dress means it hangs and drapes beautifully, I can just imagine how wonderfully it moves when you walk in it.  I love the leather neck detail and strong colours, that terracotta shade suits this models skin and hair perfectly in this shot too.

From super stylish shopping site The Grand Social, this captivating dress is $604 (AUD) and if you really can't resist you can buy it online here.  It also comes in a pretty lemon shade as well, but I actually prefer the terracotta.  If you haven't already, you must check out The Grand Social, as they have a brilliant array of Australian and New Zealand designer labels for sale.

Penny Sizzles For Stolen Girlfriends Club

Sunday, July 24, 2011

Summer is certainly going to be sweet and sexy this year from the looks of these incredible photos.  I just came across these shots of one of my favourite kiwi models, Penny Pickard, on models.net.nz and had to post them.  From Stolen Girlfriend Club's 'One Night at The Museum' campaign for Spring/Summer 2011/12, these fantastic images were shot by Derek Henderson and were just released this past week.

This collection is the one SGC debuted in May, at Sydney's RAFW, to great reviews for it's gorgeous prints, cohesiveness and sense of fun.  I really do love the beautiful custom floral prints they have used, a collaboration with New Zealand based artist, Karl Maughan.  The dress in the top photo is my absolute favourite and is totally on my must have list for summer.

I love the cheeky campaign from SGC too, that last shot is certainly rather amusing.  Back to Penny though, doesn't she look amazing?  So very glad she is still working, as she looks every bit as stunning as she did in the 90's and 2000's.  I saw her on the runway at the NZ Fashion Festival earlier in the year and hope to see more of her for years to come.  Can't wait for this collection to be in-store soon.

Kate The Great

Thursday, July 21, 2011

It may be mid-winter here in the southern hemisphere, but with sale season wrapping up the first drops of Spring/Summer 2011/12 are beginning to arrive in-store at the moment, which I could not be more excited about.  Kate Sylvester's incredible show at this year's RAFW was my absolute favourite, you can read more about it here, and the first few pieces of her fantastic 'Into The Light' collection just arrived in store today!

This gorgeous Lepidoptera print dress ($345 NZD) is one of the pieces that is now in-store and the print is an exclusive fabric designed by Kate herself.  I adore the eggshell blue colour featured in the dress and it's definitely on my wish list, along with pretty much every piece of her new collection.  You can check out her new garments for yourself at her Australian and NZ stores now.

Want To Be A Covergirl?

Thursday, July 21, 2011

Have you ever fancied seeing yourself on the cover of a magazine?  I know I have and thanks to a new competition run by online magazine Motif, you could see your face on the cover of their next beautiful issue!  The theme for the new issue is 'the new feminine' and they are running a competition to find a covergirl and girls to be in their fashion pages too.

To be in the running you need to submit an image of yourself styled in what makes you feel feminine, be it a pretty dress, leather, lace etc, whatever represents feminine style to you.  The image doesn't have to be professional, you can get a friend to take it, have a look through your favourite magazines for inspiration.  The winner of the competition will have their image used as Motif's cover for their next issue and the 10 runner's up will have their images featured in the magazine's fashion pages.

Sounds like you?  Well start shooting and send your hi-res 'the new feminine image' to covergirl@motifmag.com.  Entries close 15th August 2011.  Good Luck x

Just So Jessica

Fashion photography is one of my absolute favourite things, I'm always checking out new editorials and there is nothing I love more than following the careers of the amazing creative talent.  Jessica Sim is a young local photographer who I've covered before on this blog and whose work I continue to admire and be inspired by.  She recently posted this cute shoot on her own blog which she did for Y & F magazine, you can check it out here

I've included some of the published shots and some of the out-takes from the shoot as I love the colours, styling and beautiful use of natural light in this shoot.  It also just so happens to include one of my favourite kiwi models Derya Parlak (above), who is one of the sweetest models I've ever worked with and a gorgeous girl to boot.

The Lovely Miss Ingrid Starnes

Wednesday, July 20, 2011

Lovely local designer Ingrid Starnes' Spring/Summer 2011/12 lookbook has me wishing the lazy days of summer were here already, so I could wear these gorgeous pieces.  Beautifully subtle, soft and feminine, her latest collection is the perfect mix of modern and fresh with vintage touches.  I love that her pieces are sophisticated, yet wearable and effortlessly pretty.  This is the kind of collection I would cheerfully wear in my daily life, as the fabrics she uses: cotton, silk and lace are wonderful to wear.  The silhouettes are girly, but relaxed and just right for warmer temperatures.

My favourite pieces from this collection would have to be the red wrap dress with blue trim (3rd photo down) for it's sweetness and vintage feel and the chambray hued dress (2nd photo down), as it's the kind of dress I would live in every day and is infinitely versatile.  I've been a fan of Ingrid's for quite a while now and she has been firmly on my list of local favourites since I included her kimono shirt dress on my Monday Must Haves list late last year.  You can check out more of her elegant pieces on her website here.
