NZFW 2011: Modern Miss

Ruby

Womenswear ruled on the runways at NZFW, running the gamut from pretty to sexy and just plain cool.  I chose to put these three labels together for their modern approaches to Winter 2012.  From the futuristic at Ruby, sportswear luxe at Lonely Hearts and sleekness at Coop there were lots of looks for ladies who like to look individual and fashion forward.

Ruby presented an exciting collection which pushed the boundaries in a way that's just a bit edgy and oh so cool.  A bright range of prints and colour blocked outfits paraded down the runway, with metallic embellishments capturing the imagination and creating looks that are retro influenced but totally modern.  Knitwear, party dresses and winsome separates all felt ultra modern and perfectly styled, those prints worked perfectly together when worked into the same dresses, which isn't an easy thing to achieve and a credit to designer Deanna Didovich.  The shoes were also totally awesome and the amazing metallic strappy versions will end up on every girl's wish list for the new season I'm sure.

From the opening pounding Prodigy track, it was clear Lonely Hearts were going to present a strong show, having been absent from the NZFW runway for a few years.  The collection certainly didn't disappoint, with a pretty take on sportswear and some gorgeous girly dresses (but not too girly) in rich hues of crimson, burgundy, yellow, brown, black and bright cobalt blue.  Their delightful shearling jackets appeared again in this collection, this time in covetable crimson and black which I'm sure will sellout upon delivery.

Making their debut at this year's NZFW, new label Coop by Alexandra Dunn and Lauren Connelly, who are Trelise Cooper's design assistants, also presented a fresh, modern collection for young women.  There were lots of black sexy garments with red, dark pink, grey, mint green and ivory making up the rest of the colour palette.  Sparkly embellishments, pintucks, lace, velvet, leather and exposed zips all added to the gorgeousness of the garments, with sexy black stockings and slicked back hair amping up the hotness factor.
I enjoyed all three of these collections for different reasons, as a girl who loves dresses and femininity there were ample choices to add to my own wardrobe for Winter 2012.  I loved that we saw real growth from Ruby and Lonely Hearts, I think it's fantastic when designers try new things and new directions, learning from what works and doesn't work for their label.  Coop made a strong debut, they certainly had everyone's attention, I'll be interested to see what they come up with for next season, but that elegant red dress is on my must haves list for next year.
