NZFW 2011: Standout Salasai

Saturday, September 10, 2011

Finding myself at St Matthews in the City for the Salasai show on the first day of NZFW, I noted the subtle irony of the followers of fashion coming together in a church for a show.  Given that fashion is much like religion for it's devotees and Salasai have developed a cult following amongst us worshippers, the setting couldn't have been more perfect really.

The show itself opened dramatically, with howling, thumping music and theatrical lighting setting the scene for the strong collection that was to come.  Titled 'Unchartered Territory' it was a striking collection of gorgeous garments for both men and women by designer Kirsha Whitcher.  It opened with a semi-gothic feel before moving in a more celtic direction with amazing plaids used in dresses, separates and a kilt-like cape.  There was added prettiness in the form of beautiful lace blouses, sweet sheer dresses and lovely little collars.  The 'East Anglia' knits added to the celtic element, making the collection feel like it belonged to the coolest tribe on earth.

I loved absolutely everything about this show and collection, standout's for me were the strong plaid pieces (especially in navy/red), the outfit below with white buttoned up dress and navy cardi (I so wish I could buy this to wear to LCF), the navy coat for guys at the bottom and the long pinafores.  Salasai really seems to go from strength to strength every season and I cannot wait until this collection is in-store next year, as it's a solid wearable winter collection with that utter covetableness factor.
