This Was My Year In Fashion

Twenty-Seven Names on the runway at NZFW 2012
It's hard to believe 2012 is almost over already, with just hours left to go now, I've been thinking back on my past year in fashion and the moments and memories dearest to me.  I've been incredibly to have been involved in the fashion industry in NZ, Australia and the UK this year and have attended so many brilliant events, fashion weeks and learned so much more than I could have imagined.  I have big plans and ideas for 2013 (which include even more blogging) and can't wait to share them with you very soon.  In the meantime here are some of my favourite things from this past year in fashion:

Petal Pretty: Kelsey Genna

Tuesday, November 20, 2012

Embracing the beauty of flowers to create some of the prettiest gowns I've seen in ages, Kelsey Genna presented her debut bridal collection at a delightful trunk show over the weekend.  Hailing from Wellington, Kelsey took her gorgeous collection on tour and presented it in a beautiful salon-style setting at Auckland's Kingsize Studios, where media and brides-to-be got to have some one on one time with the young designer and view her stunning creations up close.

Tea Time With Amber Whitecliffe And Emma Highfield

Thursday, November 8, 2012

Outfit by Amber Whitecliffe
Perfectly pretty prints and beautiful bright beachwear came together on Sunday for a combined runway show by Amber Whitecliffe and Emma Highfield Lingerie.  In an appropriately lovely high tea setting with delicious treats made by Emma and charming goodie bags made by Amber, guests were treated to a wonderful afternoon of gorgeous girly fashion.

A Rose Amongst The Thornes

Tuesday, November 6, 2012

Beautiful lingerie is a passion of mine, I'm obsessed with pretty pieces of lace, silk and tulle, as I've had a rule for a long time that whatever is underneath my outfit has to be just as good as what the world can see on top.  There is just something about amazing, supportive lingerie which looks incredible and that lifts your posture that makes every outfit look better too.  So you can imagine my delight to learn of Rose and Thorne, who are a local lingerie company making some very lovely pieces and at ridiculously reasonable prices too.

Ingrid Starnes + Tessuti = Perfection

Monday, October 29, 2012

Feminine fashion is my favourite kind, the title of this blog probably gave that one away, and there are a few local kiwi designers who exemplify the kind of fashion that delights and inspires me.  Ingrid Starnes does elegant garments with a playful edge in a way that is oh so clever and beautifully ladylike at the same time.  Her new collection for S/S 2013 'Dacha' is effortlessly pretty and exactly the kind of range I would love in my wardrobe for summer.

Bright, Bold And Beautiful Prints For Summer

Monday, October 22, 2012

Florals are always big for the Spring/Summer season and Pia Boutique have brought together two of summer's best trends, neon and florals, to create a collection that radiates sunny days and gorgeous girlyness.  Local designer Pia Naera has a background in graphic design and her range has a strong focus on unique prints all exclusively designed by herself on a range of lovely fabrics.

Swim To The Surface

Tuesday, October 16, 2012

Every so often a label comes along that perfectly captures a look in such a way that you can't imagine anyone else creating anything just like it and you notice that there was a definite gap in the local market before it appeared.  Inspired by the glamour of the old hollywood screen sirens, with an aesthetic that is timeless and oh so pretty, Surface Too Deep create swimwear that is ever so beautiful and utterly covetable.

The Department Store S/S 2013 show

Sunday, October 14, 2012

Summer is oh so close now and The Department Store celebrated by showcasing their Spring/Summer 2013 collections in another of their super packed shows for local fashion fans last week.  With stunning looks from Karen Walker, Ruby & Liam, Tigerlily, Black Box, TopShop & TopMan, I Love Ugly, The Men's Department and Havaianas on display, the runway ran through the heart of the striking three storied building as Auckland's best babe models worked their magic on the crowd.

The Amazing Art Of Footwear

Sunday, October 14, 2012

Every so often I get invited to attend events that are truly special and have the kind of magic that is hard to define.  Whilst there are more and more slick and seamless events organised, Showroom 22 do seem to be adept at planning them too, sometimes you attend things that are just on a whole other level.  The lovely Kathryn Wilson planned her 'Art of Footwear' event to support Ronald McDonald House, which is a really important charity supporting the families of very sick children, the idea was to combine the launch of Kathryn's winsome new Winter 2013 collection with fundraising for RMH which Kathryn is involved with.

Fashion Month Spring/Summer 2013

Sunday, October 14, 2012

Elie Saab from Paris Fashion Week

It felt like the fashion month of New York, London, Milan and Paris for Spring/Summer 2013 blew by in a big pretty blur yet again this year.  As much as I found time to spend an hour a day (or more) on checking out the new collections and adding my favourite images to Just So Pretty's facebook page, I didn't manage to get around to blogging much about it.  Although with so many people who were actually there covering it, you do wonder sometimes about the validity of covering an event purely on internet photos, not that there's anything wrong with that, but I do prefer reading the reviews of those who were actually there.

Alice's Elegant Wonderland

Sunday, September 23, 2012

I was super excited to hear that Temperley London's new collection for London Fashion Week's Spring/Summer showing was entitled 'Return to Elegance' and was eagerly anticipating the new show.  Ladylike fashion has made a huge comeback over the past few years with it's flattering silhouettes and has meant that women are able to embrace looking like women with dresses, skirts and suiting that celebrate the female form.

NZFW 2012: Phoenix Cosmetics

Sunday, September 16, 2012

As a child of the 80's I was particularly excited to learn that Phoenix Cosmetics NZFW show was going to feature one of my favourite cartoons ever 'Jem and the Holograms' and the show certainly didn't disappoint.  Referencing every little girl's favourite moments from the 80's from Flashdance to My Little Pony there were so many moments that were an absolute delight to see on the runway.

NZFW 2012: Annah Stretton

Sunday, September 16, 2012

Twenty years in the fickle business of fashion is definitely something to be celebrated and Annah Stretton did just that with her NZFW show.  Starting with her Winter 2013 collection which was very feminine and vintage-inspired, she then presented a 'best-of' collection of looks from her 20 years in the business including the infamous boar's head outfit from 2004.

NZFW 2012: Salasai

Sunday, September 16, 2012

Like a fresh country day, Salasai breathed life into the Day 3 NZFW schedule, opening the day with a laid-back presentation so warm you could practically feel the sunshine radiating from it.  Designer Kirsha Whitcher nails understated chic with her unisex garments and the reception to her latest collection is proof that she is still a fashion crowd favourite.

NZFW 2012: Charlie Brown

Thursday, September 13, 2012

The only Australian to show on the NZFW runway this year, Charlie Brown presented her Naughty and Nice collection full of chic daywear and dazzling eveningwear to a packed house.  Known for her beautiful use of colour and prints, she showed a big collection of feminine garments with a modern feel.

NZFW 2012: Blak

Thursday, September 13, 2012

Blak was one of my favourite shows from NZFW 2011, the collection felt really cohesive and romantic with just a bit of edge.  Those twig crowns, the scarlet lace and subtle ombre prints captured my imagination and meant I had to buy several pieces and have been wearing them constantly over the past few months.

NZFW 2012: Trelise Cooper

Thursday, September 13, 2012

There was magic in the air when Trelise Cooper took to the NZFW runway for an illuminating presentation, which was the showstopper of the week.  Known for her beautiful shows with theatrical flair, the anticipation was palpable pre-show and Trelise definitely delivered.

NZFW 2012: ghd Blue Sky - Ingrid Starnes

Wednesday, September 12, 2012

Rapidly becoming the go-to label for elegant and beautifully tailored clothing, Ingrid Starnes showed a winsome collection as the second show in the two part ghd Blue Sky event last Wednesday.  A radiant collection of beauties with mostly natural looking makeup and a pretty pink lip graced the runway in a range inspired by weekends in the English countryside.

NZFW 2012: ghd Blue Sky - Twenty-Seven Names

Wednesday, September 12, 2012

Starting off the second day of NZFW in a fresh and breezy way, Twenty-seven Names were the first show in the two part ghd Blue Sky presentation on Wednesday morning.  Barely there makeup looks, cute jelly sandals and long natural hair set the tone for a collection that was understated but completely charming.

NZFW 2012: Hailwood

Tuesday, September 11, 2012

Oh Mr Hailwood, you certainly know how to make the ladies swoon with your stunning creations!  Showing on the first day of NZFW, I was suitable impressed with his new collection and as it referenced one of my favourite decades, the seventies, I was hooked from the very first look.

NZFW 2012: Ruby & Liam

Tuesday, September 11, 2012

Ruby and Liam kicked off the first day of NZFW this year with a midday show and a gorgeous start to a big week of local fashion.  In their third fashion week outing (second for Liam) Ruby and Liam pulled off a slick show with perfect styling.

NZFW 2012: Juliette Hogan

Monday, September 10, 2012

Juliette Hogan has been one of my favourite local designers since I first came across her Ponsonby Road store not long after it opened in 2007.  Ever since I've looked forward to each new collection of hers with much anticipation and excitement, and she never, ever disappoints.

Monday, September 10, 2012

Making their return to the NZFW runway after a confident debut last year, COOP showed a different direction and a beautiful new collection, which turned the fashion crowd's heads for all the right reasons.  With everything from fresh floral blazers and sexy sequined party dresses to printed velvet bomber jackets taking a turn on the runway, the look was youthful, edgy and lots of fun.

Nzgirl Hearts NZFW 2012

Monday, September 10, 2012

It's hard to believe New Zealand Fashion Week is all over and done with for another year.  This past week I've been blogging for nzgirl, doing daily reports on all the shows gracing the NZFW runway.  I had a fantastic week working with photographers James and Olivia to put all the nzgirl content together.  You can read my nzgirl daily reports at these links:

This week I'll be blogging more reports and images from shows I loved here too.

Run To Ruby

Tuesday, August 28, 2012

One of my favourite kiwi labels, Ruby, released their new collection 'Run, Run, Run' for Spring/Summer 2012/13 into their New Zealand stores and online last month.  I've been meaning to post these photos for a while as they've created such a pretty collection.  They've also recently released their new season Liam range 'Liam Takes A Trip' (bottom three photos) which is equally stunning.

Cute As Katie-Maree Cole

Friday, July 27, 2012

Sunny days like today make me wish that summer was already here in the southern hemisphere.  Alas it's still a few months away, but lovely new lookbooks like this one from Katie-Maree Cole make the prospect of summer dressing a much sweeter one.  She's just released images for her Sping/Summer 2012/13 collection entitled 'Truly. Scrumptious.' and the collection is a real delight.

Effortlessly pretty and oh so cute, these garments could easily take you anywhere in summer, from the beach to a party, or out shopping with the girls.  Katie-Maree Cole really understands how to make garments that are appealing and really wearable, with an emphasis on natural fabrics like cotton and silk.

I had difficulty choosing a favourite piece from this collection, as I'd cheerfully take it all away on a summer holiday with me.  But the beautiful draping of the Birthday dress (pink one, 5th photo down) is just too stunning to resist and my favourite piece.  It's wonderful to see another great collection from this brilliant young label.  Well done Katie-Maree Cole, can't wait until it's in-stock soon.

Blue Sky: The NZFW 2012 Edition

Monday, July 23, 2012

Runway at Showroom 22's Blue Sky event in April

The countdown to New Zealand Fashion Week 2012 is on, with just 6 weeks to go now news is starting to come in of all the stylish events happening as part of the week.  By far the most exciting news to date is that Showroom 22 have just announced that they will be hosting another Blue Sky concept event on the Wednesday of NZFW this year.

NZFW 2012: Designer Announcement

Sunday, July 22, 2012

Outfit from Ingrid Starnes on the runway at NZFW 2011

It seems to hard to believe that New Zealand Fashion Week 2012 is just over 6 weeks away now.  The past year has absolutely flown by, but it's thrilling to think that beauty, drama and excitement of the NZFW runway will be here again so soon.  FashioNZ announced the designer list of who is showing this year earlier today, with 40 labels taking part over 4 days from September 4th - 7th.

T Is For Tilly

Monday, July 16, 2012

Who doesn't love a cute clutch?  They're certainly a favourite of mine and I've just found a new one from local label Saben that has a suitable shade to match any outfit you can think of.  This adorable new bag is called Tilly and is just as sweet as her name sounds.  Available in three colour palettes; sugar, spice and just plain nice, my favourite of the three is the sweetly hued sugar range with blush, pink, mint and lilac making up the colours available, I simply can't choose which one I love more.

Oh My Dior

Tuesday, July 3, 2012

It was a show the fashion world had been anticipating for months, after a tumultuous year of change at the house of Dior, but Raf Simons stepped up and delivered a divine collection, that will likely be the toast of this week's couture shows in Paris.  The former Jil Sanders designer, known for his minimalist approach, breathed a beautiful sense of modernism into the iconic label with his debut range, whilst creating a collection that celebrates and redefines it's history.

Winsome W.E

Sunday, July 1, 2012

Although W.E was released earlier this year (sadly to a less than wonderful reception), I hadn't had the opportunity to see this stunning film until just this week.  I was struck by the incredible beauty of the production design and fascinating attention to detail in the costumes, make-up and overall look of the film.

Simple, Subtle And Oh So Chic

Saturday, June 30, 2012

This has to be one of the most elegant editorials I have seen in a while, such clean but sophisticated garments in truly flattering shapes.  I love the use of a muted colour palette with a focus on autumnal hues.  Frida Gustavsson looks so radiant in outfits that make her look refined and rather ladylike.  This shoot was shot by Victor Demarchelier for Vogue Japan's August issue and seems to be a beautiful ode to the elegant woman.

Lover, Lace & White Magick

Saturday, June 30, 2012

Could this collection be any more romantic?  Of course white lace and feminine shapes automatically make a girl think bridal and this White Magick collection is certainly a modern, yet vintage inspired range for a wedding or special occasion.  Lover always manage to get things just right, creating pieces that are beautiful, covetable and feel fresh and perfect for right now.

Backstage Beauty At Chanel Cruise

Thursday, May 17, 2012

New Zealand model Georgia Fowler (centre) at Chanel Cruise.

British Vogue have just posted a beautiful gallery of backstage shots from Chanel's sanguine Cruise show a couple of days ago at Versailles.  These are just a few of the sublime shots that are available to view here.

Magnificent MBFWA: My Top Ten

Thursday, May 17, 2012

 Alice McCall

MBFWA 2012 was by far one of the best fashion week's I have attended, there were so many stunning outfits that drew audible sighs of pleasure as they glided down the runway.  I've had a little time now to go back through the galleries and my notebook from the week to decide on my favourite ten collections.  Although I've only included the collections I was actually invited to see as I thought that was only fair.

MBFWA Daily Reports for FashioNZ

Friday, May 11, 2012

MBFWA has been and gone in a crazy blur of neon brights, sequins and spectacular fashion.  It was a real pleasure to spend a week in Sydney, getting to see the latest collections of Australia's brilliant fashion labels for Spring/Summer 2012/13.

Counting down to MBFWA 2012

Monday, April 30, 2012

Whitney Port is coming to MBFWA with her Whitney Eve label.
Just one more sleep and MBFWA 2012 kicks off in Sydney, and I'm thrilled to be here to cover it.  There has been lots of drama, hype and all sorts of rumours so far and the week hasn't even begun yet.  With no New Zealander's showing, lots of big names including Alex Perry deciding not to show this year and the last minute drop outs of Josh Goot and Dion Lee, it's been interesting to see just what the schedule would look like for the week.

Victoria's feeling floral for Harper's Bazaar

Wednesday, April 4, 2012

This is such a beautiful spring cover from Harper's Bazaar for their May issue.  The lovely lilacs and silvery tones perfectly enhance Victoria's sun-kissed skin, her subtle make-up with stunning eyes make this a can't-look-away-from cover.   Shot by Camilla Akrans, Mrs Beckham is wearing a Prada swimsuit and was styled by Sissy Vian.

The Department Store Autumn/Winter 2012 Show

Tuesday, March 27, 2012

Kicking the weekend off with a bang, the clever team at The Department Store put on an outstanding event that certainly got  last Friday’s party started.

Packing the stunningly structured store to the rafters with a stylish crowd of fashion fanatics, the doors opened at 7pm sharp and the venue filled quickly to capacity. At dead on 8pm the epic runway show got underway with the biggest cast of babe models I’ve ever seen at an NZ show. With the crowd packed into every nook and cranny of the store, the models wound their way through each floor, up and down the striking circular staircase that winds it’s way through the heart of the store.
