Outfit from Ingrid Starnes on the runway at NZFW 2011

It seems to hard to believe that New Zealand Fashion Week 2012 is just over 6 weeks away now.  The past year has absolutely flown by, but it's thrilling to think that beauty, drama and excitement of the NZFW runway will be here again so soon.  FashioNZ announced the designer list of who is showing this year earlier today, with 40 labels taking part over 4 days from September 4th - 7th.

Making a return to the runway this year is Cybele, she will be ably joined by NZFW favourites Juliette Hogan, Stolen Girlfriends Club, Trelise Cooper, Zambesi and Hailwood among others.  Showing again after a beautiful debut last year is Ingrid Starnes, and I'm particularly excited to see what she presents this year.  Deryn Schmidt, who showed a slickly styled collection in the New Generation show last year, is the only one from those New Gen labels to be going solo this year, I'm very interested to see what she does too.

This year's NZFW is going to have a significantly quieter schedule at this stage with just 20 shows, as quite a few labels from last year (and some of my absolute favourites of 2011) are not showing at all this year.  With the immense financial pressure of the continued recession combined with the huge expense of putting on a fashion week runway show, it's not surprising that quite a few labels have chosen not to show this year.  I guess the thing to remember is that NZFW's schedule changes a lot year to year and I'm sure many of those labels will return in coming years.

At MBFWA in Sydney earlier this year, they used an installation space called 'The Box" which presented a potentially cheaper and creative alternative for labels to present a collection in their own way.  Whilst some labels made great use of the space (I loved Jayson Brunsdon's, Jenny Kee's and Akira's presentations), and others were more difficult to see properly, it was still a great way to see a new collection.  I wonder if NZFW could benefit from this alternative in future?  Since it offers more options for labels to still show as part of fashion week, but in a way that allowed them to control the space and potentially keep their costs down a bit.  Twenty Seven Names utilised this idea for their installation at last year's NZFW, using photographs instead of live models, but it would be great to have an onsite space as well.

As the weeks race by and NZFW draws closer, I will be paying close attention to any further NZFW announcements and will remain entirely hopeful a couple more of my favourites decide to show.  Can't wait to see the full schedule soon too.  Bring on NZFW 2012!
