Captivating Couture By Paolo Sebastian

Tuesday, December 10, 2013

Do outfits this exquisite get an audible sigh of delight from you?  They certainly do from me, and I'm completely entranced by Paolo Sebastian's stellar combination of ethereal beauty and vintage Hollywood glamour that combine so beautifully to create something truly special.  In an era when fast fashion has taken over and neon, short shorts and Miley-esque looks are everywhere, it's wonderful to see a label that puts the emphasis on craftsmanship and making every detail utterly sublime.

Celebrate Rituals With Meadowlark

Monday, November 25, 2013

Every so often a label comes along that has the ability to take you on a journey and transport you somewhere unique, leaving an indelible mark in your experience and a reminder of just how incredibly creative some teams are.  Meadowlark Jewellery are indisputably one of those amazing local labels that have mastered the art of creating really covetable pieces, whilst telling a spellbinding story that keeps you coming back for more every season.

Winter Dreaming With Ruby

Friday, November 15, 2013

Whilst the weather may be rapidly warming now, those of us in fashion are firmly focused on Winter 2014, as excitement levels rise in anticipation of the arrival of the new collections from February onwards.  Cult local label Ruby launched their stunning new winter 2014 collection entitled 'The Dreamers' at an exclusive event at Auckland's newly renovated Victoria Park last week.

Feeling Floral With Number One Shoes

Sunday, November 10, 2013

Summer is rapidly approaching and florals are everywhere again this season, especially in footwear.  Number One Shoes held their summer launch recently and showcased a great range of affordable styles for the warmer weather, but my eye was drawn to these pretty floral and lace shoes.

Finding The Perfect Fit at Rose And Thorne

Thursday, October 31, 2013

Lovely lingerie that's affordable, well designed and comfortable is high on every woman's wish-list, but so often hard to find.  Last year I visited Rose and Thorne, a fabulous local company, who create quality lingerie at very affordable prices and are stocked at nationwide chain The Warehouse and online, which makes them accessible to pretty much every woman in New Zealand.

Spend The Summer With Liam

Sunday, October 27, 2013

The warmer weather is finally arriving in the southern hemisphere and Liam's perfectly timed summer collection has also just arrived in stores.  Presenting a relaxed range with a feel of casual elegance, designer Emily Miller-Sharma drew inspiration from the 'vivid descriptions of the Indian Territory in the Sundarbans Jungle in Salman Rushdie's novel Midnight's Children' which is certainly a fascinating starting place for a collection.

A Very Vintage High Tea

Saturday, October 19, 2013

In the mood for some vintage inspiration?  A couple of weeks ago I was fortunate enough to work on a very special event for the Very Vintage Day Out, a high tea in collaboration with DeBretts Hotel, the stunning art deco hotel on High Street, which featured a fashion show produced by myself and the VVDO.

Lose Yourself With Juliette Hogan

Saturday, September 28, 2013

Wednesday night saw Auckland's fashion set gather for one of the most anticipated shows of the upcoming winter season by my favourite local label Juliette Hogan.  Opting not to show at NZFW this year, but instead hosting her own event in the beautiful historic setting of Hopetoun Alpha, there was a palpable buzz before the show as the full house waited for Juliette's Winter 2014 collection titled 'Lose Yourself' to be unveiled.

Celine Rita's Royal Summer

Thursday, September 19, 2013

It's delightful to watch a designer develop and go from strength to strength with each new season, so it was with great pleasure that I got to preview talented designer Celine Chapman's upcoming 'A Captivating Lady' Summer 2013/14 collection for her pretty young label Celine Rita last week.  Drawing inspiration from the most iconic of muses, the late Princess Diana, Celine's range is a beautiful collection of pieces that explore the evolution of Diana's style in the public eye.  Starting with the shy kindergarten teacher who captured the world's imagination and moving on to the confident woman who did things her own way and embodied the modern monarchy, Diana left an indelible mark on the world of fashion.

NZFW: The Wrap Up

Thursday, September 12, 2013

Model Jennifer Tooley on the runway for Twenty-seven Names

It's hard to believe New Zealand Fashion Week is done and dusted for another year, as per usual it flew by in a busy blur and perhaps, since it was shorter than ever, was all over and done with way too quickly.  It's been nearly a week now and it's taken me this long to put my wrap up into words because I wanted to reflect for a few days on everything.  Usually for me the day after fashion week and indeed the few days afterwards have that day after Christmas feeling, the mild blues following intense, emotional and sometimes overwhelming highs.  But unfortunately this year there wasn't all that much to get really excited about.

Don't get me wrong there were some stellar collections, Zambesi definitely presented the show and collection of the week, their backstage reveal made for one of the most fascinating shows ever at NZFW. Some of my favourite labels; Twenty-seven Names, Hailwood and Salasai, all presented brilliant collections and Twenty-seven names effortlessly cool yet oh so charming collection was the perfect start to the week. It's just that some others were decidedly lacklustre and a few didn't feel runway ready at all, much less for fashion week where the standard is usually very high and the best in the industry are perched on their seats in anticipation hoping to be delighted.

The Marr Factory: Kate Sylvester

Sunday, September 1, 2013

Back in April I blogged about Kate Sylvester's incredible new collection shown at MBFWA in Sydney, 'The Last Sitting', inspired by the last few years of Marilyn Monroe's life.  Now it's no secret I was completely smitten with it all and would cheerfully add every piece to my wardrobe, so you can imagine how excited I was to be invited to see it again on the last night of The Marr Factory at Auckland's Golden Dawn.

Giveaway: A.O.K - All On K Road show tickets!

Sunday, September 1, 2013

It's hard to believe another year has flown past so quickly and NZ Fashion Week is almost here already.  To celebrate this year's event and my new home just off K Road in Auckland I'm excited to have a double pass to the A.O.K. - All On K Road show to giveaway.  Featuring four brilliant K Road designers; Hailwood, Jimmy D, Maaike and Lela Jacobs, the show will be a diverse mix of styles and aesthetics that are uniquely New Zealand and from labels that all have stores and workrooms based on K Road.

I Heart Ruby's Favourites

Thursday, August 22, 2013

Penelope Jumper

Who doesn't love a greatest hits collection?  Fresh and pretty local label Ruby are releasing a fifteen piece limited edition collection of some of their favourite pieces from 2008 - 2012, just in time for the start of NZ Fashion Week next month!  Designer Deanna Didovich has gone through and curated this gorgeous range, which I was thrilled to see includes some of my own personal favourite pieces from the past few years too (Who didn't love the adorable polka-dot Billy dress?)

Westpac Young Designer Competition 2013

Thursday, August 15, 2013

There are few things more exciting in fashion than seeing the designs of brand new talent, even better is getting to help them achieve their dreams.  This week the Westpac Young Designer Awards launched their public voting for the 10 semi-finalists via Facebook, the winner receives a brilliant prize package to help kickstart their career, including $5000 in a Westpac business account, a one year internship in Zambesi's workroom and one year's business advice from Westpac.  How amazing would that be for a young designer?

Surf's Up With Stolen Girlfriends Club

Wednesday, August 14, 2013

Summer is fortunately getting closer by the day and last week I was fortunate enough to see Stolen Girlfriends Club's preview of their high summer collection 'Rogue Wave', due in stores from November.  It's been really interesting to see the development of this label over the past few years as it's matured and this new collection has to be my most favourite yet.

A Modern Marilyn

Wednesday, August 7, 2013

Marilyn Monroe has long been a muse for artists in every genre and interestingly enough she seems to be having a moment again in fashion right now.  Much like Kate Sylvester's new collection, this editorial is inspired by Marilyn's iconic beauty with looks that are chic and subtlely sexy.  Featuring the gorgeous Martina Dimitrova and lensed by Byron Mollinedo, this shoot is one of Fashion Gone Rogue's editorials and has definitely has put me in the mood for spring.

Spring Has Sprung At Number One Shoes

Sunday, August 4, 2013

I'm pretty sure that spring is the best season ever, the flowers start to bloom and everything feels fresh and clean again (that's what spring cleaning is for right?), what could be a better time for pretty new shoes?  Last week I was kindly invited to attend Number One Shoes new season launch for spring, which was a beautiful high tea presentation in a walk-in wardrobe style set up.  Now that was just as amazing as it sounds, walls and tables covered in shoes as far as the eye could see, with delectable treats on gorgeous vintage china making for perfectly timed afternoon snacks for the hungry fashion pack.

Stunning Spring Couture From Paolo Sebastian

Saturday, July 27, 2013

Spring is by far my favourite fashion season, I've never been a fan of winter so the arrival of fresh, pretty hues, lighter layers and floaty fabrics makes my heart beat faster, much like this stunning new collection from Paolo Sebastian.  Hailing from South Australia, these gorgeous garments are by Adelaide couturier Paul Vasileff, who at just 23 has made a name for himself as an in-demand evening and bridal gown designer.

The Marr Factory Returns For 2013!

Wednesday, July 24, 2013

Models in Karen Walker at The Marr Factory in 2012

Following a sell out edition last August, which saw some of New Zealand's leading fashion labels transform Ponsonby's Golden Dawn into a hub of spring fashion on a quirky chalk-drawn runway, The Marr Factory is back again for 2013!  Presented by Courvoisier this year, in association with Hallertau Beer, The Marr Factory promises 5 nights of fantastic runway fashion with Karen Walker kicking off the first event on August 25th.

The Rapid Rise Of Holly Rose

Tuesday, July 23, 2013

Holly Rose in Kate Sylvester's Spring/Summer 2014 campaign

I'll confess a year ago I hadn't heard of Holly Rose Emery, the 17 year old Auckland teenager who has recently walked in Paris on the couture runways for the likes of  master couturiers Valentino and Elie Saab. Why you ask?  Well, Holly Rose has literally only been modeling a year, her first runway appearance was at New Zealand Fashion Week last September and as much as she was tipped to be a modeling star on the rise at the time, I don't think anyone would have predicted quite how far she's come in the past year.

Monday Must-Have From Pia Boutique

Monday, July 22, 2013

You know spring isn't far away when florals are catching the eye again and pretty prints are even more alluring than usual.  Piquing my interest at the moment is this charming Blue Minty Frill dress by talented young designer Pia Naera of local label Pia Boutique.  She has just released new prints in her captivating range of frill dresses, the cheerful colours and bold prints of which are so light and joyful they're quite simply happiness in garment form.

C Is For Candice

Sunday, July 21, 2013

Celebrating the arrival of the fall collections in America, Candice Swanepoel features in this stunning editorial shot by Terry Richardson for the US edition of Harper's Bazaar.  Set in the breathtakingly beautiful Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park in Utah, the deep earthy tones of the desert complement the soft and feminine hues of the garments making for some gorgeous photos.

My Week In Fashion - 3rd June

Monday, June 3, 2013

Outfit by Stolen Girlfriends Club on the runway on Wednesday

Winter has well and truly arrived in New Zealand, which makes the current Spring/Summer showings happening make me wish winter would hurry up and be over already, even though the new S/S stock starts arriving already next month.  This past week has been another busy one with Stolen Girlfriends Club's 'Nasty Goreng' show and a visit to Ciel PR to see their new collections on my schedule.  My cool new Glassons varsity sweater turned up via courier as well too, I had such a great time making it at the instore event the week before, more about that later.
Ciel PR was my first appointment of the week with the lovely Aych McArdle and I popping to have a look at the huge range of labels in the showroom.  We were lucky enough to get to chat to designer Teresa Hodges from Blak about her success in London, as her label is now available in TopShop's amazing Oxford Street store, which is a huge coup for a kiwi label.  We got to have a look at her Blak Love range for Spring/Summer which is fresh, pretty and really wearable, see a shot below of one of my favourite pieces.

Also in the showroom was Sarah-Jane Abraham of Surface Too Deep, whom it was lovely to see again as Aych and I got to chat to her about her label's success at MBFWA and putting that collection into production.  There were so many labels to look at we were in there for over two hours looking at everything, my favourite ranges were those by Lucy McIntosh, Vaughan Geeson, Riddle Me This, Blak, Chaos & Harmony and Pardon My French, expect to hear more about all of those labels over the next few months.

On Wednesday night Stolen Girlfriends Club presented their 'Nasty Goreng' collection in their own inimitable way, gathering a huge group of fashion media and followers into an industrial warehouse space before sending sexily dressed models down the runway and finally their new customised Mini Paceman to the delight of the crowd.

As expected from the SGC team, the collection was young, fun and tongue-in-chic, I loved the lingerie inspired looks and hot neoprene party dresses.  Their new signature print 'Death Moth' in black, lilac and mint green which was also emblazoned on their car was another highlight for me and I loved the use of delicate lace mixed in with edgier textures.  The collection was a definite hit and I could see some pieces that I'm sure will be hot-sellers come summer.

SGC designers Mark Moore and Dan Gosling on the runway with their customised Mini Paceman

The Friday before I attended Glassons super fun Glassons Varsity pop-up store event where a group of fashion media and stylists got to have a go at customising their own varsity sweaters and tshirts.  Such a great idea, as who doesn't love customising their own clothes etc?  I went for a traditional-ish look on the front of mine with a cute heart detail on the back of the neck as you can see below, what do you think?

As I didn't have a chance to wait around for it to be finished at the event, the team at Glassons kindly sent it out to me this past week and I've had it on for most of the weekend.  If you're keen on making your own customised sweater or tshirt the Glassons varsity pop-up shop is currently in Glassons Newmarket in Auckland but it will be travelling, so keep an eye on Glassons Facebook here to see where it pops up next.

Shop One Night Is Nearly Here!

Wednesday, May 29, 2013

Mondegreen's RaRa dress in Cherry
After a phenomenally successful event last year online shopping event Shop One Night is back again this year and is just one week away now.  Bringing together all kinds of one-off deals and discounts in a frenetic night of shopping, lots of NZ's top brands are involved and have been partered with local media and bloggers to help generate online buzz for the event.  Last year the combined power of the brands, media and shoppers resulted in Shop One Night's hashtag #S1N being the top trend on Twitter for the night which is pretty amazing.

I'm most excited about the event because this year I've been partnered with gorgeous fashion and homewares label Mondegreen, which is a label I fell in love with at last month's Wellington Fashion Week.  At the moment I'm preparing my own edit of their pretty winter collection which I'll be posting about next week as well as the deal they will be offering on the night.  But if you just can't wait pop over to, to have a look at their pretty Winter 2013 collection.

Check out more about Shop One Night 2013 on their website here and make a date with your computer for June 5th from 6pm to do some serious shopping.  Can't wait!

Surface Too Deep Makes A Splash In Sydney

Tuesday, May 28, 2013

Models backstage at Suface Too Deep's MBFWA show

This year’s Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week was a special one for New Zealand, with the triumphant return of Zambesi, Kate Sylvester’s knockout Marilyn Monroe inspired collection and the brilliant Australian debut of young swimwear label Surface Too Deep in the Group Swim show making the kiwi contingent proud.  Now it’s the latter that was the most exciting to me, because it’s not every day you get to witness first hand two young New Zealander’s present a collection that blows away the rest in their category to the utter delight of the crowd.

Meadowlark Reigns Victorious

Tuesday, May 21, 2013

One of the best things about this time of year is getting a sneak preview of what's coming for Spring/Summer 2013/14, and last week I was fortunate enough to attend Meadowlark Jewellery's preview of their stunning new collection.  As well as getting to view the range up close, we were also treated to a tour of the workshop and got to witness how some of the pieces are created, which was really fascinating as all of Meadowlark's jewellery is made on-site.
Clever designing couple Greg Fromont and Claire Hammon specialise in making unique jewellery with a playful edge and this new range is really something special.  Entitled 'Veni Vidi Vici' which is Latin for 'I came, I saw, I conquered' and infamously said by Roman ruler Julius Caesar in 47BC, the collection is a striking mix of stunning pieces themed around battle and victory.
The devil's claw pieces which were inspired by leather armour represent the former 'Veni' and are definitely battle-ready.  Amusingly the eyeball pieces are a play on 'Vidi', literally meaning 'I saw' and are actually rather charming as eyeballs go, definitely conversational pieces.  My favourite pieces were the beautiful wreath pieces, which represent victory 'Vici', the amazing oversized necklace was the standout for me.  I also adored the incredibly detailed wreath earrings too, you would certainly feel victorious wearing them!
Fittingly young singer Lorde wears the wreath necklace in her new video for 'Royals' and I couldn't think of a better adornment for her whilst performing that particular song.  I'm certain this unique range will find it's way into the collections and hearts of Meadowlark's fans come it's release in a couple months time and I for one, can't wait to shop it.

Shop The Custom Shoes By Romance Was Born

Monday, May 6, 2013

A psychedelic explosion of colour and craziness, Romance Was Born certainly captured the imagination of the assembled crowd on the first day of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia last month.  Amongst the out-there outfits and amazing make-up were some pretty stunning shoes and I was thrilled to discover that not only were they a collaboration with online shoe design company Shoes Of Prey, but the shoes are now available to customise and buy online as well.

Monday Must Have - Fredrick dress from Ingrid Starnes

Monday, May 6, 2013

It's been absolutely ages since I did a Monday Must Have post, but I've decided to bring them back as I see so many beautiful pieces all the time that I want to share and it's nice to have a format to do so that's more consistent.  Ladylike fashion is still very much around and I'm a big fan of designers that can create feminine pieces with a timeless feel but put their own twist on them.

Kate Sylvester Smoulders At MBFWA 2013

Sunday, April 21, 2013

Sensual, feminine and inspired by one of the most iconic muses in the world, Kate Sylvester's 'The Last Sitting' collection presented at MBFWA last week was my highlight of the week.  The invitation depicted Marilyn Monroe from the sublime series of photos taken of her by Bert Stern just six weeks before her death, which had me intrigued as Marilyn didn't strike me as a likely muse for Kate Sylvester, so I was greatly anticipating this collection and it definitely didn't disappoint.

My Favourite Collections From MBFWA 2013

Sunday, April 21, 2013

Serpent and The Swan

It's hard to believe Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia has been over and done with for a week now, I had a fantastic time in Sydney and was thrilled to see so many collections in person, even though it felt like it all went by in a shiny blur. I've finally had a chance to put together some images from the collections I loved and looks that took my breath away. With the exception of Kate Sylvester and Surface Too Deep whom I'll be posting about separately.

Carey Mulligan Dazzles As Daisy

Wednesday, April 17, 2013

My 1920s flapper fever just kicked up a notch upon seeing these incredible images of Carey Mulligan as Daisy Buchanan in the new The Great Gatsby film, which is released next month.  Director Baz Luhrmann's stunning adaptation of the 1925 F. Scott Fitzgerald novel is going to be an opulent drama showcasing the sumptuous fashion, decor and style of the period and US Vogue are so excited they've devoted their upcoming May issue to the film.

Tuesday, April 16, 2013

Aurelio Costarella's incredible installation at MBFWA 2013

I can't believe Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia 2013 is done and dusted already.  I spent the week covering the runway action for Thread, you can read my daily diaries here:

Stay tuned this week for my own reviews of my favourite MBFWA shows and an exclusive interview with New Zealand label Surface Too Deep who made their MBFWA debut in the Group Swim show last week.

Charming Céline Rita

Tuesday, March 26, 2013

Nestled away just off a busy street in Auckland's Newton is the workroom and boutique of Céline Chapman, the lovely and talented young designer of local label Céline Rita. Willowy, blonde and girlishly pretty with the same sweetness and charm that is evident in her collections, Céline welcomes me into her space for a chat about fashion, France and first ladies on an overcast Friday afternoon. The dull greyness outside starkly contrasts to the light white interior, which makes a perfectly subtle backdrop for her beautifully bright summer collection hanging from the racking. Céline's adorable nearly two year old puppy, Flo, is also there to greet me and is Céline's daily companion in the open-plan space from which her one woman operation is based.

An Adorable Education In Ruby

Wednesday, March 13, 2013

Gorgeous local label Ruby released these sweet images today of their new sixties-inspired capsule collection 'An Education' which is released in Ruby stores and online this Friday.  I'm absolutely amazed that the super busy Ruby team, lead by designer Deanna Didovich, have enough time to create another capsule collection with their super busy schedule, but it's totally winsome and a perfect excuse to add some transeasonal pieces to your wardrobe.

Into The Woods With Ted Baker

Sunday, March 10, 2013

Aren't these images delighful?  Ted Baker's southern hemisphere Autumn/Winter 2013 collection is truly beautiful and I love the babe in the woods style of this shoot.  The model's exquisite porcelain skin and auburn hair perfectly complement the petal-pretty prints and striking silks, wools and furs in the range.

Max Hearts Magnum Pink And Black

Monday, March 4, 2013

The perfect mix of beautiful and indulgent, Max Fashions and Magnum hosted a fun fashion/food event combining two of my favourite things, gorgeous fashion and delicious icecream last Wednesday.  Magnum have just launched two new flavours, Magnum Pink (my favourite) which is pearlescent pink and Marc de Champagne flavoured (I know, pink champagne flavoured icecream is my idea of girly heaven!) and Magnum Black which is espresso flavoured and a coffee lovers dream.
