Lose Yourself With Juliette Hogan

Saturday, September 28, 2013

Wednesday night saw Auckland's fashion set gather for one of the most anticipated shows of the upcoming winter season by my favourite local label Juliette Hogan.  Opting not to show at NZFW this year, but instead hosting her own event in the beautiful historic setting of Hopetoun Alpha, there was a palpable buzz before the show as the full house waited for Juliette's Winter 2014 collection titled 'Lose Yourself' to be unveiled.

First up Juliette captured our attention with a striking short film created by husband and wife team Todd Bilton and Rachel Morton, which featured the gorgeous Ngahuia Williams (above) in the lead role.  Showing the heroine escaping from the wrong kind of love and making a brave and visually stunning journey from urban Auckland to a stunning West Coast beach, the audience were taken a long for the ride with strong acting from the talented Ms Williams.  You can watch the film online here.

Next the elegant new collection was revealed as opening model Georgia Fowler (below) took to the runway in a chic ivory ensemble which perfectly captured the crisp, clean aesthetic that forms the basis of Juliette's new direction.  It's fascinating to watch a designer's collections change and develop as they age and in Juliette's case that's meant a shift from soft, vintage-inspired ranges to a more mature, modern and confident look with masculine influences.  The beautiful feminine touches are still there of course, Juliette does wonderfully tailored dresses and amazing lace pieces oh so well,  but there is a tougher edge to the simplicity that dominates her new range as you can see below.

Utilising a clean palette of neutrals contrasted with scarlet and lush floral prints, the fabrications were luxurious and made up of silk, leather, lace and knits.  As always Juliette's collection is incredibly wearable and carefully cut to be effortlessly chic and covetably cool, it's going to be very hard to decide whether to buy the masculine-style blazers or perfectly pretty floral dresses first.  Although I do have my eye on the subtly sexy Leroy leather dress in black (below).

This is a clever and confident collection from Juliette, which reflects her new signature of uncomplicated dressing in an utterly desirable way.  This woman knows what she wants and I'm sure many others will want to dress like this as well next winter, I know I do.
