New Zealand Summer Dress Edit

Friday, December 26, 2014

Twenty-seven Names Seychelles dress

The summer break has arrived in New Zealand so it's no surprise that summer dresses are on my mind and have been for weeks now.  As much as it's fun to buy new season as soon as it arrives in stores so you don't miss out, sometimes it's a little annoying to buy clothes when it's not the right weather to wear them.  Since summer has finally arrived it is definitely warm enough to wear this great collection of dresses, whatever you plan to do with your summer.

Celine Rita's Italian Summer

Friday, December 12, 2014

It's been a big year for local designer Celine Chapman with her label, Celine Rita, celebrating its fifth birthday this year.  In an industry where many new labels come and go within a few seasons, getting to your fifth year is a massive achievement.  It's such a pleasure to watch Celine go from strength to strength as a designer too, her collections continue to delight her many fans and myself each season and this range is another stellar one.  I recently chatted to Celine about all things fashion and her label's special birthday.

Amber Whitecliffe's Stunning Summer

Sunday, December 7, 2014

Summer has finally arrived in New Zealand and it's wonderful to be able to wear all the warm weather offerings currently in stores.  A few weeks back I wrote about Amber Whitecliffe's summer launch at her boutique which I attended and spoke at about my career and experiences in fashion so far.  It was a really fun night and I was pleased to see so many young bloggers there and read their posts about their experiences of the event afterwards.  Although the star of the night was definitely Amber's beautiful summer collection 'Mrs Pinto' as you can see here from these pretty lookbook shots.  I left this post a little while as I wanted to read all the coverage of the event and then let the dust settle so to speak before reminding everyone of just how gorgeous these pieces are.

Wilson Trollope's Sweet Summer

Tuesday, November 25, 2014

One of the best things about fashion weeks is discovering new talent and I always take a keen interest in the New Generation shows as it's fascinating to see the creativity of the latest crop of designers.  At this year's NZFW feminine label Wilson Trollope caught my eye as a parade of pretty florals, ladylike skirts and structured tailoring took to the runway.  I recently chatted to the label's charming young designer, Annabelle Wilson, about her brand, NZFW and her latest summer collection.

Aim's Chic Debut

Tuesday, November 18, 2014

One of the brand new labels to make their debut at NZFW was Aim, a recent addition to Huffer's stable and a welcome newcomer to New Zealand's womenswear market. Their first collection has just dropped in Huffer stockists and online and it's been a pleasure to discover that this sophisticated range, fronted by campaign model Bambi Northwood-Blyth, is just as chic in person as in these images.

Georgia Alice Wins DHL Fashion Export Scholarship 2014

Wednesday, November 12, 2014

Congratulations to the amazing Georgia Currie of local label Georgia Alice who was just announced as the winner of the $10,000 DHL Fashion Export Scholarship for 2014 this morning.  This is the seventh year the scholarship has been run and it's designed to help fashion businesses achieve further exporting growth, getting more brilliant New Zealand fashion into overseas markets.

Do You Know Who Makes Your Clothes?

Sunday, November 9, 2014

Garments in Ingrid Starnes' Newmarket boutique. Image by Elizabeth Clarkson Photography.

Have you thought about who made the clothes that hang in your wardrobe?  It's an important question and one that a lot of us don't give enough consideration to at all.  Like everyone else I never used to think that much about the sources of my clothing choices before I got into fashion. However, in the past few years I've been trying to make more conscious shopping decisions and asking questions of retailers and designers, so I know what I'm buying and where it's made as there are so many reasons to support locally made garments, wherever in the world you may be reading this.  I've always been a big supporter of the New Zealand fashion industry since I was old enough to realise where and how clothes are made, and the fact is everyone from every walk of life wears clothes so we all make decisions that impact the garment industry all the time.

Amber Whitecliffe: Mrs Pinto Preview Event

Monday, October 27, 2014

One of the best things about working in fashion the past few years has been all the wonderful people I've gotten to meet and in turn a number of them have become friends.  Of course there is nothing more exciting than watching your friends follow their dreams so I was thrilled for the lovely Amber Pinto, who showed her label Amber Whitecliffe for the first time at NZFW this year.  She opened the first New Generation show with her summer 2014 collection 'Mrs Pinto' which I wrote about at the time as it was a gorgeous collection as you can see by these images.

Natalie Chan: Postcards From Paris

Sunday, October 26, 2014

There are few things more elegant than beautiful millinery, it has the power to elevate an outfit from everyday to extraordinary.  But like many other artisans, milliners are becoming a rare breed, which is why it's always a delight to see the work of local labels like Natalie Chan, who are continuing on the old traditions and are creating headwear that maintains impeccable craftsmanship while embracing modern ideas as well.

Karen Walker: Ten Years Of Making Faces

Wednesday, October 15, 2014

Karen Walker threw the fashion party of the year on Friday night at The Sapphire Room to celebrate the tenth birthday of her eyewear label.  It was such a pleasure to attend an amazing night with an abundance of confetti, champagne and cake (by The Caker), what could be a better combination for a birthday party? The night also featured two photo set-ups one re-creating KW's 'Dictator' campaign shoot from 2006, the other recreating her confetti strewn 'Celebration' shoot from her latest range (below) which was a lot of fun and super popular.

Huffer's Classic Summer

Sunday, October 12, 2014

1997 is a year that I remember fondly, it was my last year at high school, and yes, I know I'm giving away my age here when I say that but it's relevant to my own fashion story.  My style had changed from the Nirvana inspired grunge of the early nineties to a more feminine but still quite simple look. I was embracing being a girl but in the minimalist way that reigned in the second half of that decade. Huffer were founded in 1997 and for this summer have returned to their birth year and created a collection that perfectly captures that time but still feels modern and definitely reminds me of styles I wore back then.

Paolo Sebastian's Couture Mermaids

Saturday, October 4, 2014

I've written about amazing Australian couturier, Paolo Sebastian, a couple of times now because his creations are really what my fashion dreams are made of.  Handcrafted in the most delicate tulles, silks and chiffons with some of the most beautiful beading I've ever seen, these are gowns that mix high glamour with modern femininity for a fairytale ending.  His latest collection for spring/summer 2014/15 is truly breathtaking and really does remind me of mermaid gowns is the best possible way.

Stella McCartney And Kate Moss Team Up For Breast Cancer Awareness

Wednesday, October 1, 2014

Today marks the start of Breast Cancer Awareness Month and in an effort to help raise awareness and support for the Linda McCartney Centre, designer Stella McCartney has created a limited edition three piece collection which goes on sale today.  The range is part of her Autumn/Winter 2014/15 lingerie collection and is the Gemma Relaxing style, available in neon pink.

Deadly Ponies New Stable

Tuesday, September 30, 2014

It's certainly the season for new store openings at the moment and there have been some very exciting developments in Auckland's own fashion scene.  Local label, Deadly Ponies, who have attained a cult following for their impeccably made leather goods, opened their first permanent store recently on Mackelvie Street in Ponsonby.  It follows the success of their Ponsonby pop-up store that lasted for a year despite originally being a short term idea.

Cute Collaboration: Ruby X Gattobravo

Saturday, September 27, 2014

One of the things I love most about local label Ruby, aside from their sweet and quirky aesthetic, is the capsule collections and collaborations they do every year.  In a world which is constantly scouting for the next new thing, producing extra collections certainly helps Ruby keep their fans and the media interested and this latest range is no exception.  This time designer Deanna Didovich collaborated with London based, French illustrator Gattobravo, after becoming fascinated with a fluid sketch of hers last summer.

Hirschy: A Lonely Lingerie Affair

Tuesday, September 23, 2014

Be still my beating heart, Lonely Hearts have just released their latest range of Lonely lingerie, entitled 'Hirschy' and it's oh so beautiful.  Their lingerie ranges have amassed a cult following in the past few seasons and it's not hard to see why.  They have such clever styles that are vintage-inspired, yet look of the moment and perfectly blur the line between lingerie and outerwear.  The garments are very much fashion pieces yet with the supportive functionality you would expect from great lingerie, although rarely does local lingerie look this unique.

The Week that was NZFW 2014

Saturday, August 30, 2014

Bella Smith wearing Celine Rita on the NZFW runway

It's hard to believe another New Zealand Fashion Week is done and dusted already, yet again it flew by in a blur of lipstick, sequins and hairspray, especially as the shows only last just over three days now.  NZFW is a special event for me in the sense that it's the first fashion week I ever attended (more years ago then I'm going to admit to here) and I'm a huge fan of all the amazing creative talent we have in NZ, it's always a pleasure to see some of my favourite labels on the runway.

NZFW 2014

Monday, August 25, 2014

It's hard to believe another New Zealand Fashion Week has come around again so quickly.  As always I'm really excited to see what the designers have in store for us this week, there are so many talented creatives in fashion, it's a thrill to see what they come up with for their NZFW runway presentations.

A New Day Dawns For Juliette Hogan

Friday, August 15, 2014

There are few labels that do modern femininity as well as Juliette Hogan, her collections have grown to embody an elegance and classic wearability season after season, whilst still maintaining a contemporary feel.  Her latest collection 'New Day' for Spring/Summer 2014 is another confident offering from the designer, which is sophisticated, summery and perfectly captures her style of casual luxury.

The Transformation of Staple+Cloth

Sunday, August 10, 2014

One of the best things about New Zealand fashion is its ability to reinvent itself and Staple+Cloth is a perfect example of a new business born out of a former one.  Previously Creative Director, Sharon Condon, worked for Kingan Jones and recently bought the label, transforming it into her new brand Staple+Cloth.  Of course what could be a better title for her first Staple+Cloth collection than 'Transformation' which definitely lives up to expectations.

The Marr Factory is back for 2014!

Wednesday, July 23, 2014

Super exciting news today with the announcement that the brilliant fashion show series, The Marr Factory, is returning again for 2014 to Ponsonby's The Golden Dawn.  Expanding to six nights this year, from August 17 - 23, all of last years labels are returning including: Karen Walker, Kate Sylvester, Zambesi, Nom*D, Helen Cherry and Workshop, as well as the fabulous creative teams from Stephen Marr and MAC.  The labels will be showing their in-season Spring/Summer 2014 collections which will be available in stores at the time too, after all there's nothing better than seeing a great look on the runway and being able to shop it straight away.

Shine With Ruby This Spring

Sunday, July 13, 2014

It's hard to believe that the southern hemisphere's spring season is just around the corner now, the first collection of which arrived in stores this weekend with the debut drop of Ruby's gorgeous new range 'Diamonds'.  Channeling the iconic and incredibly stylish Elizabeth Taylor, also drawing influences from Taylor's long-term holiday home, Palm Springs, this new collection is truly winsome and oh so chic.

Celine Rita's Parisian Winter

Sunday, June 15, 2014

Fancy a trip to France this winter?  As the cooler weather closes in local label Celine Rita is drawing on a European influence to present a collection that also harks back to F. Scott Fitzgerald's romantic Paris of the 1920s.  Designer Celine Chapman has titled the collection 'The beginning of everything' which is a quote of Fitzgerald's that references falling in love with his wife Zelda and was the starting point for the collection.

Kate Sylvester's Two Friends

Thursday, May 22, 2014

A great story draws you into a world so vivid that you become enraptured with its characters and go on a journey that inhabits your imagination and toys with your emotions.  Fashion too has the ability to tell stories and it's no surprise that you relate more to the designers who try to take their audiences on a journey with them. Kate Sylvester is one such designer who creates detailed worlds for her collections and puts a lot of effort into bringing many carefully thought out ideas to life in a cohesive and relatable way.

Ingrid Starnes' Beautiful Bletchley Park

Thursday, April 24, 2014

Since launching in late 2010, Ingrid Starnes has been a label that has fascinated me, the ladylike collections that are carefully crafted, with just a few of each piece made, capture my imagination every season.  This range for Autumn/Winter 2014, is entitled 'Bletchley Park' and is another elegant collection with mid-century English references, particularly timely at the moment as we remember the ANZACs.  In fact Bletchley Park was an actual place where mostly young women worked as code-breakers intercepting and analysing messages from the enemy during World War II.  These women were intelligent, resourceful and committed to helping the British military win the war, and as it happened there were also women in New Zealand working on the same task, my own grandmother being one of them in Wellington.

A celebration of fashion: MBFWA 2014

Friday, April 18, 2014

Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia is one of my favourite weeks of the year, last week's was my sixth and despite missing some of my previous favourite labels, it was definitely an inspiring week of fashion.  It's always really hard to narrow down the shows to my favourite ten, as there are always so many contenders and this year was no exception, the only thing that makes it a little easier is that there were slightly fewer shows again this year.  As per usual I was covering the event for, you can check out my daily reports from the shows co-written with Mr Fashion Man Craig Lawson here.

Ruby Set To Shine At Wellington Fashion Week

Thursday, March 27, 2014

One of my favourite local kiwi labels, Ruby, whom I've written about a lot on this blog over the years, are doing a solo show at this year's Wellington Fashion Week, and if their last show was anything to go by it will be amazing.  They will be showing their Autumn/Winter 2014 collection 'The Dreamers' which is oh so sweet and the perfect mix of contemporary cool and romantic femininity.  It's described as capturing 'the moment in time when your mind is halfway between reality and dream.'

Doutzen's Goddess Moment

Saturday, March 8, 2014

It's hard to think of a better model to portray a modern goddess than Doutzen Kroes.  The divine Dutch model's delicate features and incredible bone structure lend themselves perfectly to the role as seen here captured by Cuneyt Akeroglu for Vogue Turkey.

Juliette Hogan's Elegant Winter

Saturday, February 22, 2014

A few months ago Juliette Hogan presented her beautiful Winter 2014 collection 'Lose Yourself' on the runway at the gracious old Hopetoun Alpha.  The collection stuck in my mind afterwards for several reasons; firstly the impeccably chic tailoring and elegance of the garments, the divine fabrics and prints of course, and the subtle sexiness of the sheer lace garments with leather trim.

In Love With Lonely

Wednesday, February 19, 2014

Lovely label Lonely Hearts released their new Lonely lingerie collection 'Seon' recently and followed it up yesterday with the release of their first Lonely Lounge collection.  I've been a big fan of their beautiful lingerie since it's first collection and could not be more enthusiastic about this new range and it's loungewear counterparts, which as the name suggests are meant for lounging (winsomely of course).

Karen Walker's New York Fashion Week Fall/Winter 2014 Collection 'The League'

Wednesday, February 12, 2014

New Zealand has a proud history in women's rights, being the first country in the world to grant women the right to vote was a thoroughly modern achievement in 1893.  Now in 2014, Karen Walker is celebrating those Sufragettes in a contemporary way with her latest collection for Fall/Winter 2014 entitled 'The League'.

A Charming Winter's Tale in Navy: 'I'm Lost' by Twenty-seven Names

Wednesday, February 5, 2014

Outfit from Twenty-seven Names Winter 2014 collection 'I'm Lost'

Nestled amongst a cluster of cafes and stores on busy Vivian Street in downtown Wellington is Twenty-seven Names’ first flagship boutique.  A simple monochromatic sandwich board printed with the brand’s name landmarks the spot and leads you into a light and airy shop with white walls, exposed brick and beautiful artwork amongst the rails of garments.  It’s here on a sun-dappled and breezy December day that I meet with Anjali Stewart, one half of the duo that founded Twenty-seven Names, a local label that has developed a loyal following since its inception in 2006.

Perception by Liam

Friday, January 31, 2014

There is something to be said for simplicity.  Designer Emily Miller-Sharma nails this idea beautifully with her label Liam, whose signature could be described as modernism with a twist.  The look is elegant and chic with an easy wearability that appeals to a range of ages.  Liam's Autumn/Winter collection 'Perception' was released today and as you can see from these lookbook images, the collection is full of subtle texture and soft, feminine silhouettes.

Twenty Fourteen

Wednesday, January 1, 2014

The first day of the new year always brings with it high expectations and a sense of excitement and promise of a fresh new 12 months in which anything can happen.  For me it's been a particularly good day knowing that I'm now just a few weeks away from going on another adventure (of which there will be much exciting new fashion to blog about).  I'm heading over to San Francisco, New York, London, Paris and a few other places to attend fashion weeks and absorb as much fashion as possible. As you can imagine, I can't wait for these new adventures and to share my findings with you.
