Gertrude dress from Ingrid Starnes' Winter 2015 collection.

There are few things more interesting or often asked in fashion then the inspiration behind a new collection.  In the case of local label, Ingrid Starnes, the answer is always an intriguing one and it begins with the collection title 'Le coups de foudre' which translates as 'the bolt of lightning'.  Starnes has taken a literary muse this season in the form of Gertrude Stein, the American-born but French residing writer and poet, who held famous salons at her apartment in Paris during her 40 year stay in the city from 1901 onwards.  She was great friends with many cultural figures of the time including Matisse, Picasso, Hemingway and F.Scott Fitzgerald and was well-known herself for her literary works and impressive modernist art collection.  The lightning from Starnes' title comes from the description of falling in love at first sight and the energy of that feeling, it references Stein's relationship with her partner Alice B. Toklas and also the strong relationships with her closest friends that helped inspire her work.

As you can see this collection is simply sublime and draws on vintage influences from the 1920s - 1960s with some modern twists.  The signature floral print was hand-painted by Starnes and is inspired by the work of Matisse, whilst the delicately pretty lace adds to the softly French feel of this range.  Like all of Ingrid Starnes' garments these pieces are cleverly constructed and impeccably tailored to create very wearable clothes that you can rely on for many seasons to come.  Frankly I think everything about this collection is perfect and covers all the bases for an autumn to winter wardrobe.  I'm particularly fond of the chic grey Gerald trench and pleated green Claudette dress, not to mention the incredible cream lace Florant dress in the last two photos which could easily be an amazing wedding dress.

Speaking of weddings, Starnes now offers a bridesmaid service where she creates custom-made dresses using styles from her current and previous collections in a range of beautiful colours and fabrics.  Given how many gorgeous dresses she has made in the past few years this seems a natural extension of her business and no doubt will make for some exceptionally well-dressed bridesmaids in future.  You can find out more about her bridesmaids service here.

Ingrid Starnes elegant new collection is available in her boutique, stockists and online.
